HAWKES BAY

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ‘ NAPIER, July 25. The successful horseman Hector Gray has been engaged to ride the Auckland horse Wauchope in the Winter Cup. , C. L. Lagor, owner of California, intends to make a trip to the other side with the San Fran horse, provided he can make arrangements to have his team looked after during his absence. California pulled up a trifle sore at Trentham on Saturday. Messrs. G. B. Oman and C. Morse, owners of Paisano and Te Arai respectively, wrote to the Racing Conference with reference to penalties incurred by the horses named at the Grand National meeting for winning at Gisborne. The Grand National weights were due on the Sth, and the horses named were successful the previous day. The handicaps, however, were published on the 6th, and the owners contend that they should not be. called upon to carry extra weights. The Conference decided to refer the matter to the Canterbury Jockey Club. Bullworth left this morning for Trentham where he will join Kiatere and Woolloomooloo and the trio will proceed to Lyttelton on Monday night. Bullworth and Woolloomooloo have been leased by Mr. A. F. Douglas to his trainer, J. M. Cameron, from August Ist to 31st. The trip to Australia was under consideration, but was abandoned. W. Young, who has been riding with great success this winter, has been engaged to ride the Gisborne horses, Te Arai and Paisano, in the Grand National Steeplechase and Hurdle Race respectively. Neither Nero nor Sir Lethe are probable starters at Riccarton. There is this to be said of Nero that if he successfully negotiates the schooling fences during the week and shows no signs of a recurrence of his old trouble, J. Griffiths, who has him in his charge, will give him a further test to get him ready for the National meeting, but the general opinion is that Nestor’s son. will not come out of the ordeal serenely.

Rangi Thompson, El Dorado’s pilot at Riccarton last season, will ride the jumping members of the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s team at Riccarton. This horseman is quickly getting into the front rank of jumping riders. At Trentham on Saturday your correspondent noted that Beeline’s position at the finish of th ?. July Steeplechase was due to the amount of ground his rider saved during the race. There have been enquiries locally for Tawhaki and North-East for the Winter Cup. Local horses more than held their own at Trentham. The Hon. J. D. Ormond had quite an innings on the opening day. J. McLaughlin won a double with the Multiform colt Multiple, who ran a good race each day and should bo a useful performer over middle distances next season. California also won a double and with any sort of luck would have repeated his performance of two years ago when he won a treble at Trentham. The Hastings contingent wound up with a win in the final event with Tina Toa, who carried the confidence of his connections each day.
