PONSONBY CLUB’S SWIMMING CARNIVAL.

The Ponsonby Swimming and Life Saving Club held their final carnival of the season in the Albert-street Baths on Saturday night, in the presence of a small attendance. A good deal of the interest seemed to have gone out of the carnival as a result of the club being unable to secure the Auckland Graving Dock, while it was really too late in the season for a gathering of the kind. The water was very cold, which was responsible in a large degree for the fields being reduced considerably. Cheif interest centred around the 220 Yards Championship of Auckland, and as M. E. Champion was an absentee from this event a better race was looked forward to, as had Champion competed he must have had an easy win. C. Welson, of the Waitemata Club, proved the winner, and must, however, be given credit for his performance as he swam the distance in 2min 44 2-5 sec, which is very good time, and within 2-ssec of the standard. The results were as follows: —Novice Handicap, 50yds: First heat —H. Hyams, ss, 1; G. Cook, 4s, 2; S. P. E. Francis, 7s, 3. Time 33 3-ss. Second heat —H. Elliot, 9s, 1; O. Stewart, 4s, 2; A. V. Singe, 3s, 3. Time, 35 2-ss. Third heat —R. McDonald, 6s, 1: F. Matthews, 6s, 2; V. Buckland, 4s, 3. Time, 32 3-ssec. Final heat — McDonald, 1; Matthews, 2. Won easily. Time, 36 2-ssec. Boys’ Handicap (under 17 years), 50yds: W. Lunn, 6s, 1; C. Stone, Bs, 2. Time, 35 l-ssec. 220 Yards Championship of Auckland: C. Welson (Waitemata), 1; F. >J. Kernott, 2; R. H. P. Ronayne, 3. Also started L. Fristrom. The men set off at a good pace, the first 100yds being covered in 68s, while 180yds were left behind in 2m 12s. Welson had assumed a good lead, and eventually won by about 10yds from Kernott, who was a similar distance ahead of Ronayne. Time, 2m 44 2-5 sec. This event was not swum last year, Champion holding the title since he defeated F. E. Dodge in March, 1908. He did not defend the title on Saturday evening. Long Dive: W. R. Horton (51ft), 1; H. Carlsen (50ft), 2. The performance of the second man was particularly meritorious, he being a onearmed swimmer, and therefore at a disadvantage under water. His course was not straight. Easter Handicap, 72yds: First heat —R. Bell, 3s, 1; A. Cowley, 3s, 2; A. V. Singe, ss, 3. Time 51 l-ss. Second heat —C. B. Waldron, 4s, 1; F. H. Baker, Is, 2; H. Knight, 2s, 3. Time 51 3-ss. Final heat —R. Bell, 1; C. B. Waldron, 2. Won easily by 2yds, but there was a very close go for second place between Waldron, Baker and Cowley. 440 Yards Club Handicap: First ■heat: J. McQuillan, 255, 1; M.W. Rees, 225, 2; W. Lunn, 50s, 3. Won by 6yds. Time, 6m 58 4-ss. Second heat — A.. : Campbell, 30s, 1; F. J. Kernott, 14s. 2; H. Baxter, 355, 3; Won by Byds. Time 7m 22 3-ss. Final heat —McQuillan, 1; Rees, 2. Only two finished. Won by Byds. Time, 6m 495. Back Race, 50yds: S. Francis, 1; H. Stein, 2. Autumn Handicap, 100yds: A. Cowley, 4s, 1; L. Fristrom, 3s, 2.
