BEYOND ENDURANCE.
Two Scottish sngar^pia.nters ■, in Demerara were boastihg aboiit their indifference to the: bites of mosquitoes. The dispute got so warm that Mac bet Allistef /that he was the better man. Both agreed to lie down on the verandah in the scantiest raiment. Smoking and drinking were
permissable, but the first man who complained of the bites was to lose a five-pound note. For a long time each endured the onslaught of the blood-suckers; but at last Allister could stand it no longer. He turned over preparatory to capitulating, and noticed that Mac’s back was towards him. Allister was smoking a cigar, and; carefully removing the ash, he applied the redhot end to Mac’s back. “ Eh, mon,” yelled Mac, “that was a dickens of a gallinipper! ” “ You’ll send me the fiver in the morning,” was the only remark of Allister, who tumbled into his clothes as quickly as possible.
