THE MANUKAU YACHT CLUB’S EIGHTH RACE.

On Saturday, with a nice breeze, the Manukau Yacht Club sailed off the eighth race of the season, this being for the Albert medals. The entrants and handicaps were as follows: —Anahera, scratch; Heather, scratch; Manola, 2m.; Wairere, 4m.; Viking, 6m.; Edith, 12m.; Bronzewing, 17m.; Hilda, 17m.; Thistle, 18m.; Elsie, 18m.; Wave, 19m.; Edna, 25m.; Adieu, 28m.; Mahinga, 36m.; Clematis, 39m.; Amua, 40m.; Presto, 46m.; Mana, 52m. The day just suited the backmarkers, and Anahera in quick order went to the front, with Heather in close attendance. The leader piled up on a bank and lost her plate, Heather winning easily by 6min from Manola, with Bronzewing and Hilda next.

Mr. Fleming Day, editor of the “Rudder,” has written me that he will be in Auckland about December next. The American yachting journalist may be sure of a hearty welcome from Auckland knights of the tiller when he arrives in the Waitemata. The big launch Maroro left port for an extended cruise last Saturday evening. * * • » The Waitemata Dinghy Club will hold a race for 15ft dinghys and under next Saturday. * * • * When is the Rudder Cup to be competed for ? It is high time there was a race or the trophy returned. * * . * « Mr. Thos. Henderson has just had a smart-looking 14ft dinghy built to his order. She has been named Rita and will carry the commodore of the Dinghy Club’s flag. * 9 • ♦ The old Spray, with veteran Capt. Gibbs in charge, was at Deep Creek for the week-end.

The big yawl Viking is still away cruising. I noticed several yachts at Arkle’s Bay on Saturday evening. A good spot this when the wind is south to north-west. ♦ $ < • The smart cruiser Matareka 11. was at the Lake on Saturday with an immense passenger list, and at Putiki Bay on Sunday. * * * • With wind and tide in her favour, Thelma made a fast trip up from Waiwera on Sunday. sc * 9 * Barring a very heavy rain squall on Sunday morning, the week-end cruise on the 28th and 29th was one of the most pleasant for a long time. * * V Waitemata and West End were the only competitors in the two four events at the Kopu Regatta, both events falling to Waitemata. * * * ♦ The Auckland swimmer, M. E. Champion, is in a class by himself. On Saturday he further added to his laurels by winning the 220yds Provincial Championship of Auckland, and the 100yds Invitation Scratch Race. In the first event Kernot (Auckland) and Dodge (Christchurch) filled the places, but in the 100yds Dodge filled second place and OYHare third.
