HAWKE’S BAY.

Waipawa B.C. Birthday Meeting—A Full Sister to Oryx—A Half-sister to Flower Girl—Tortoise —Raynor’s Proteges—Beohahite—Bawhiti —- Tanglxnoana and Sandix—A Half-brother to Elevation-—A Handicapper Appointed NAPIER, November 13. With the exception of a heavy shower of about ha’f an hour’s duration, which fell just as the Northern excursionists alighted from the train, the weather was favourable for the Waipawa meeting. Naturally ,the course was a trifle slippery, which no doubt accounted for the falling of Gaiety in the Grandstand Handicap. Her mishap gave First Foot his quietus, for the black son of Robinson Crusoe fell heavily over her. The ex-

ecutive toiled hard to make the meeting pleasant for patrons, and it is satisfactory to note that their efforts had the effect of producing record results, the sum handled by the “tote” officials amounting to an increase of over the takings registered at a similar venture last season. In the majority of instances the contests were full of excitement. The whole meeting was carr.ed out most satisfactorily, for which great praise is due to the secretary, Mr. C. M. Whittington and his staff of officials. Placebo, a younger full sister to Oryx, has been taken in hand by W Stone; the same educator is also instructing Mss Beckwith’s two-year-old colt by Captain Webb in the first rudiments of his studies. Placebo is the property of Mr. H. H. Pharazyn, the youngster belonging to the sport who goes a racing under the nom-de-course of Mr. A. Stuart.

Ru. the three-year-oid half-sister by Waiuku to Flower Giri showed on Monday at the Wapawa Racing Club’s Birthday fixture, that she pos esses a family qualification of being able to gallop. Considering that she had to be stopped in her work for the past fortnight through meeting with an accdent on the Hastings traln’ng track, her defeat in the Maiden was no disgrace. She is a par-sweet-tempered filly, and appears to be blessed with a large amount of brains.

J. Ra o exper enced a stroke of bad luck this week in Aroha going amiss, and his mentor, who has not had too rosy a time lately, reckons that the racing career of Sequah’s son is ended.

It is not often that two full brothers win two successive races in the one day; such, however, was the case last Saturday at Riccarton, when Zimmerman and Oxton downed their foes in the Jub'lee Cup and Landolph Handicap. Tortoise, who made such a good fight of it with Sir Benson in the Hack Fly ng at Waipawa on Monday is a relative of the well-formed Mil enial- As the latter mare is by Apremont out of Millennium, she being by Carbine out of Taihoa, while Tortoise is by Apremont out of Taihoa “Paddy” Raynor had Catseye and Prince Hassan in fine nick, and his good work on their behalf was productive of excellent results, as he obtained two wins and a second out of three starts. Catseye, who is by Turquoise out of Vision, must not be considered, as is often the case, a full brother to The Seer, for though the latter breeding is also returned by Turquoise out of Vision, h s dam and Catseyes are two totally different mares.

Harry Piper has been appointed starter to the Pahiatua Racing Club. Goldfield, who was lately an occupant of a box at Whittaker’s establishment, is now one of C. Lagor’s students. Concussion is showing a great deal of proficiency over the battons. She should prove more than useful at the illegitimate game, as she has a fair amount of pace, and is as game as a fighting cock. I noticed Rechabite being hacked about by Mr. Stanley Bennett, though not a very attractive looking gelding he makes an ideal saddle horse Rawhiti, a full brother to Twyford, one of F. La wry’s pupils, was given a good chance by his party :n the Scurry Stakes at Waipawa on Monday, but he failed to materialise. Earmark is reported to be in queer streetW. Kirk and D. Kemp, with a couple of scores apiece, headed the victorious horsemen at the Waipawa Birthday meeting. H. Manning, E. Lowe and F. Whitehouse each increasing their winning record by a notch. Tangimoana and Sandix, the first and second horses in the Clareville Handicap on the second day of the Taratahi-Carter-ton Racing C'ub’s spring meeting, are both the productions of the Te Mahanga stallion San Fran. Tangimoana was sold as a yearling to her present owner for 50 guineas, when Messrs. W. J. and A. F. Douglas sent up their annual batch of juveniles in 1905. Sandix’s dam Minature (Medallion —Miss Lucy), who is owned by Mr. R. S. Abraham, of Palmerston North, formed one of San Fran’s harem in 1902. Mopia, one of the also started in the Scurry Stakes, won by Prince Hassar, is an elder full sister to M Uenial. A full-brother to Gravitation and half-

brother to Elevation, made hih appearance last week at the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s breeding quarters; his dam (Stepfeldt) is at Karamu, it being Mr. Bidwell’s intention to again mate her with Birkenhead. Mr. W. G. Nightingale has been appointed handicapper to the Marumaru Hack Racing Club.
