Taieri Meeting—Winton Jockey Club’s Meeting—St, Joe purchased, by Mr. Clay—Gold Crest —Petrovna—Rider of Cup Winner—Contestants at Biccarton—Accident to Xi G. King—Hon. J. D. Ormond’s Horses at Biccarton. DUNEDIN, November 13. The annual sporting meeting held by the Taieri Amateur Turf Club on Monday last was successful from a financial point of view, but it left a great deal to be des’red in other respects. A couple of North Islanders in Mrs. Crawley and Makikihie, ran unsuccessfully during the day, but both were sore and did not display the form which they probably would have exhibited if fit and well. The Winton Jockey Club held a successful gathering on the 9th and nth, and the totalisator figures for the two days were or over above last year’s investments. Gold Crest did not run the same colt in the Jubilee Cup that he did in Steward’s and Derby, and it is highly probable that the races he had run earlier in the meeting, in addition to being kept busy on the track, took a good deal of the steel out of him. In the Jubilee Cup Gold Crest did not display his great brilliancy, and although apparently being

allowed to run along he could not get to the front.

Apo lodoris made a bold display in the Members’ Handicap, but the opposition was too good for him at the finish, and he coud not get any nearer than fifth when the post was reached. Begon'a and Miss . Burlington, a coupe of well-known performers on the trotting track were sold last week, and were left beh nd in Christchurch.

Petrovna looked backward when racing last week, as she sport.; some of her winter coat. Prior to landing, ’Frisco, the w.nner of the New Zea’and Cup, L. G. King had ridden into a p.ace on three occasions he was third on Miss Delaval and Canteen, and second on Fulmer. Other mounts he has had in the Cup are Lord Ross yn and Calibre.

The Duned n sprinter Lupilite was one of the pricked balloons that attempted to rise to success, at Riccarton last week, but failed .0 do anything to justify the reputation he has been enjoying. In hi; first race Lupulite had bad luck as he stumb ed bad y at the start, but when sent ou: favourite for the Randolph Handicap he appeared to get a clear run, and was never n the hunt after going about three furlongs.

The two Dunedin horses Astrakhan and Motus were chopped out at the start of the Fendalton Handicap, and were the a t pa r to reach the back stretch, the former improved his posit.on., but the latter was in the ruck throughout; both horses, however, appeared to be outclassed in thenr races, and they will have to improve considerably before they are entitled to a chance in high-class company. Master De 1 aval appeared to be improving with each race he had last week, and f the Canterbury Cup had been run at a more sol d pace the battle between him and E evation would not have gone to the latter without a greater struggle between the par at the finish. Owing to meeting with an accident when a foal the Aura colt Go'd Braid (half-brother to Aurum) cannot bend his neck; the colt ran fairly we’l in the Fendalton Hand cap, and was close up to the leaders at the finish. For a horse that looked about half fit Maniapoto was kept very busy at the Cup meetings, where he was asked to race on each of the four days; he is a good horse, but it is not a very herculean task to convert a good horse into a bad one.

The Multiform —Curfew Bell filly Sweet Angelus, was probably the smartest two-year-old seen out at Riccarton last week; her dam, Curfew Bell, was got by Bill of Portland from Wild Rose by Newminster from Primrose by Goldsbrough. The St. Ambrose —Seashell colt, which fell to the bid of Mr. L. C. Hazlett at the yearling sale held last week, will remain in Christchurch, as he was purchased in partnership with the wellknown trainer W. J. Taggart, who was anxious to secure the half-brother to Sea King. A private message has reached Dunedin that L. G. Kng broke one of his arms a couple of days ago. It appears he was riding in a cab, and as a result of one of the wheels coming off King received the injury mentioned.

The one-time Dunedin trainer Stewart Waddell had a good run of luck with the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s horses on the conclud ng day of the Cup meeting. Kairoma was beaten a head by Gwendolina in the Members’ Handicap, and the bearer of the cerise jacket would have won in all probability had his rider made more use of his mount. In the following race the stable was successful with St. Aidan, but the element of luck was w'th the colours on this occasion, as Elysium lost ground through boring when running for the rails on the course proper, and thereby lost the Stakes. Zimmerman won the Jubilee Cup after a great race, and Jones is deserving of a word of praise for the very capable manner in which he handled his two winners. Oxton completed the ‘hat trek” for the stable by winning the Randolph Handicap, and placed the followers of the colours on excellent terms with themselves.
