Mr C. I). Wallace’s new schooner Bona, recently built for him by Mr Walter Reeves, of Sydney, has gone to Melbourne. Sir Rupert Clarke’s new schooner La Carabine, has been fitted with a new foremast, the one she got in Auckland being found too weak. These two fine two-stickers are to have an ocean race from Melbourne to Sydney, at least so report says.

A coi’ferenca was held in Sydney recently between delegates from the two principal Sydney yacht clubs and. the R.Y.C.V. with regard to future interstate races. Mr Gollin offered the cup he had just won as a challenge trophy—to be called the Sayonara Cup —between New South Wales and Victoria, competitors to be limited to 52-rating, and to sail from port to port on their own bottoms. The question of establishing a cup for. a smaller class, open to all Australian States and New Zealand, was also discussed, and, after going through the correspondence which had been received from Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, Hobart, Sydney and Melbourne it was found that owing to the divergence of the views expressed therein it was quite hopeless to attempt to settle anything at present.

The auxiliary s.y. Consuelo, ex Vagus, ex Wanderer, 708 tons, which was recently purchased by the Admiralty as a surveying ship' on jthe Australian coast, was built for the late Mr C. J. Lambert, in the year 1878, by Steele and Co., Greenock, at a cost of just on £lOO,OOO, her build being composite, iron frame, and teak planking. After several long passages, including one round the world, she was bought and passed into the hands of the Prince di Tori onia, and after this lay at Naples until the year 1895, when she was purchased by Messrs Marvin, of Cowes, who afterwards sold her to Sir Richard Bulkeley. He fitted her out for an extended cruise, which, however, was curtailed owing to the outbreak of war in South Africa. In the year 1900 she was sold to the Earl of Crawford, who cruised in her one winter, and then purchased the large ship-rigged Valhalla. Since then the Consuelo (to give her her latest name) has been reclassed at Lloyds, and has had new decks, boilers and thorough overhaul of hull, and Lord Iveagh has taken a cruise in her.

It is reported that the advocates for the turbines for the new Cunarders have succeeded in establishing their case. The firm, of which the Hon. C. A. Parsons, the inventor of the marine steam turbine, is the head, has submitted detailed designs for engines up to (no less thas 60,000 horse-power, although such enormous energy is not necessary for the subsidised Cunarders, leviathans though they be. The plans show that proportionately much less propelling machinery will be occupied by the turbine, and that valuable economies in coal and the engineering staff will also be effected.

The well-known yacht, Waitangi, built in this colony, which some years ago won the big intercolonial race in Sydney against the Janet and Magic has been sunk by the French steamer Pacifilque. The accident happened at Noumea, where the Waitangi has been stationed for some considerable time.

The new P. and 0. liner Moldavia, 10,000 tons, acted as flagship 1 ! at the Anniversary Regatta at Sydney. Bona won the race, for all yachts, time by rating, and Cooya won the all yacht’s Handicap. Both were built by Charles Bailey, junr., of Auckland. The regatta was a great success.

Mr C. D. Wallace’s new schooner Bona, on her voyage from Sydney to Melbourne logged up to /eleven knots per hour. She will prove a trifle Sultry for La Carabine to tackle.

The big yacht race at the Anniversary Regatta is generally. admitted to have been one of the finest struggles ever seen on the Waitemata. Thelma beat Rainbow by one second after a desperate battle, while the go between Ida, Thetis and Moana was worth going, miles to see.

Janet’s win on Saturday in the resailed 30-footer’s R.N.Z.Y.S. handicap was a very popular one. She was exceedingly well handled by Alec Sutherland, who certainly deserved a win, fci he is always ready for a race no matter what the size of the opponent may be. * * * * The R.N.Z.Y.S. Class Races are dov for decision on Saturday. Entries close to-night.
