The match between W. G Abbott and H* Gladding run on the Cricket Ground on Wednesday in last week . attracted a lot of attention, and a large number of people assembled at that part of the Auckland Domain* Tbe match was for £2O a-side, run over three distances—looyds, 200yds, and 300yds. Mr F. W. Coombes was starter, and Messrs F. P. O’Dowd (junr.) and Hugh Absolum judges* The first race was the 100yds. Both broke away several times, and when the pistol did go off Abbott had two yards the best of it. This he maintained the whole way. The 300yds came next. There was the same jumping off by both men, and eventually Gladding beat the starter by about three yards. For half the dis* tance he held that advantage, but then Abbott gradually closed on him, and after a great go over the last 75yds Gladding just got home by a little more than twelve inches. In the 'conclude ing race, the 200yds, Mr Coombes effected a beautiful start, and for nearly a hundred yards the men ran level Shortly after the halfdistance Abbott forged ahead, and despite the utii.ost efforts on the part of Gladding, the Otahuhu man won by two yards. Abbott thus won the match, and the stakes were handed over to his father, Mr W. Abbott. As there was some doubt about the correctness of the measurement the times recorded cannot be considered of any value. The match throughout was run in the best possible spirit, and the supporters of both men were unanimous in the opinion that the bdst man won.

At St. Louis, on October 19, M. O’Flaherty was announced as the winner of the contest for putting a fifty-six pound weight 22 ft. at the Coliseum. An investigation developed that he is none other than ths Catholic priest of that name, tho pastor of tit Vincent’s Church on the programme the young priest—he is not over 27 —was entered as a Christian Brother’s College man. Father O’Flaherty says that barring the possible interference of the Archbishop he will compete in any of his favourite contests that may be held in St. Louis hereafter. Previous to coming to America he was a winner in many weight-throwing contests in Ireland, where he was educated.—“S. F. Examiner.”
