At the Gisborne Police Court last week, Frederick Holford pleaded guilty to supplying a prohibited person with liquor, and was 'fined £5 and costs, 15s, seven days bring allowed to pay the fine, in default 30 days’ imprisonment. Mr H.W. Nothcroft, Stipendiary Magistrate, sat •day to hear a batch of King Country sly grogselling informations. Sub-Inspector Wilson (of Auckland) and Constable Lowry prosecuted on behalf of the police. A charge against Ngamiri Hauparoa (a Maori woman), residing at Otorohanga, that she sold whisky to a half-caste named Emery was dismissed. Mahuri (a Maori) admitted that he sold whisky to Maurice O’Connor. Mr Northcroft imposed a fine of £l5, or the alternative of one month’s imprisonment. The costs amounted to £3 19s 3d. Ngatai, a Maori residing at Poro-o-tarao, pleaded guilty to selling whisky to James Ryan. He was also fined in a similar manner, the costs being £3 19s 3d, and the default one month’s, imprisonment. A second information against Ngatai was withdrawn by the police The Magistrate gave the Maoris one month’s time to pay the fine and costs.

There has been no definite step yet taken in the direction of applying for an additional license in New Plymouth.—The Club Hotel, Stratford, has changed hands, Mr Mumford having sold out his interests to Mr Wareham, late of Wellington. —There seems to be a lull in the keen demand for houses in this district, the prohibitive prices asked for properties no doubt minimising enquiries.—(Taranaki Correspondent). At the Wellington Magistrate Court last week, George Mawson, a caterer, sued F. W. Sears and Robert Gray for £7 17s 3d, on account of refreshments for a “social” for which the two defendants were respectively chairman and treasurer. The gathering was held at Berhampore some months ago. Sears paid £5 into Court. Mr Haseldon, S.M., gave Judgment against Sears for the full amount claimed, and non-suited plaintiff as against Gray. Costs totalling £1 16s were added to the amount of the judgment.
