Mrs Kenning’s Railway Hotel, at Lumsden, was destroyed by fire one night last week. Sergeant Treanor has been transferred to the Napier district. The refreshment booths at the Avondale racecourse were under the capable management of Messrs Stillwell and Grattan.

A few days ago a man was fined in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court for refusing to quit the Oriental Hotel when requested to do so. Mr James Sclanders, the head of -the wellknown firm of wine and spirit merchants, died at Christchurch recently. The Public Petitions Committee have taken a vast amount of evidence on the question of licenses for the King Country. The Premier, Mr Seddon, gave notice on the 19th. inst, of his intention of introducing the Licensing Act Amendment Bill. The new hotel that is being built for Mr M. G. Power at Waihi, is rapidly approaching completion.

Mr Wm. Richardson, in addition to the charge of causing an obstruction in the street on August sth, was last Friday served with a summons for causing a similar obstruction on August 26th.

Mrs V. G. Reid, the well-known hostess of the Kaipara Hotel, Hellensville, has sold out to Mr Dave Donovan, Mrs Reid intends taking a prolonged rest from busmess.

A man charged with drunkenness at the Christchurch Police Court last week was very anxious that the police should commit themselves as to whether it was possible for a man to get drunk on eighteen-pence. The Bench apparently thought it was, as they fined him 5s and costs.

The accommodation house and dwelling of Mr W. Ulark at Woodlands (Toka Toka), was completely destroyed by fire on the Bth inst. The house was uninsured, and great sympathy is expressed by the settlers at the great loss that Mr and Mrs Clark have sustained by the fire.

The Whatawhata Hotel, recently in the occupation of Mr Geach, has been purchased by Mr Sam Fairweather, lately of Waitara. Mr Fairweather has leased the hotel to Mr A. C. Greenwood, who hails from Stratford. Mr Greenwood is well-known in racing and trotting circles, and I wish him every success in his new venture. The following changes in southern hotels are reported in the Times : —Messrs Zohrab and Co this week report having sold Mr A. W, Harrison’s interest in the lease of the Masonic Hotel, Havelock, Marlborough, to Mr E. Crosby, late of Wellington ; Mr 0. Anyon’s interest in the lease of the Alfredton Hotel, near Eketahuna, to Mr W : Paulin, late of Bulls; and Mr James Mumford’s interest in the lease and furniture of the Club Hotel, Stratford, to Mr Joseph Wareham, late of Barrett’s Hotel, Wellington.

In previous years the convictions reached the following totals: —lB9s, 40 ; 1896, 40; 1897, 98; and 1898, 73. "
