VIGILANT.]

There were some splendid struggles and finishes in the athletic events last Saturday, when the Auckland Cycling Club held a sports meeting at the Domain, in aid of the Patriotic Fund, and Mr Eyre (the handicapper) was a proud man. The Patriotic Handicap was run in three distances —l9oyds, 200yds, 300yds, the two first being run in heats. The final of the 100yds was won easily by F. Gladding (7yds), McCarthy (7fyds) 2, Turner (7|yds) 3; time, lOsec. The second distance, 2 Oyds, resulted : Gladding (12yds) 1, Abbott (11yds) 2, McCarthy (14yds) 3; time, 29sec. Third distance, 300yds: F, H. Somers (4yds) 1, W. G. Abbott (16yds) 2, F. Gladding (17yds) 3 ; time, 32see. The handicap was thus won by F. Gladding, F. H. Somers second, W. G. Abbot third. The One mile Flat Race at the Domain on Saturday will long be remembered by those who witnessed it. Eight started, but the real race was between those three well-known distance men, Hucketep (scr), W. Farquhar (25yds), and A. Pearson (60yds) Coming into the straight on the home run Huckstep was with his men, and it looked a good thing for him, but Farquhar and Pearson came again, and amidst great excitement they finished a deat, with Huckstep about three inches away third. Time, 4min 32 2-ssec. T. George (50yds) and D. Payne (55yds) ran a great race in the Half-mile Flat, George just manging to stagger home in front of Payne, A. Pearson (20yds) third. Time, 2min 2 2-ssec. The men comprising the Auckland team to do battle for the Championship at Wellington on Saturday left on Monday. They are G. W. Smith, C. C. Laurie, and J. Dickey. Unless any distance men travel on their own we shall not be represented in races over a quarter-mile. In any event, the Auckland reps will give a good account of themselves. W. D.
