The Quinlivan- Douglas Claim — George Hope loses Douglas’s String.

January 28.

Mr Quinlivan has started a Supreme Court action against Mr W. Douglas claiming £2,679 12s 6d for damages, and also to decide the ownership of the mare Brooklet at the time of her winning the Wellington Cup. The secretary of the Wellington Racing Club has also been served with an injunction by the same gentleman to restrain him from paying over the stakes won by Brooklet at the late Wellington meeting. Both Messrs Douglas and Quinlivan paid for the mare’s acceptance for the Wellington Cup. The Waipawa Racing Club have received an intimation from Mr Hall, M.H.R. for Waipawa, that they will be granted the use of the totalisator for two meetings in the year. This will upset the fiat of the Metropolitan Club, who decided at their last monthly meeting that no more than one license to use the machine could be granted to the Waipawa Club. It will be remembered that the Town and Suburban Club were ruled out also, but they applied to their M.H.R. with the result that they also got a permit. That some club in the district will have to lose a meeting’s permit is a certainty. Who it will be is now tbe conundrum that requires answering, or will the Metropolitan Club take upon itself the role of the pascal lamb and suffer for others. January 31.

Messrs. Sibley and Pope’s Trenton —Girofle filly is running on Mr G. Hunter’s estate at Porangahau, and 1 believe it is the intention of her owners to place her in Gooseman’s hands to receive her education.

George Hope and Sam Lindsay had a good day’s outing at the Danevirke races this week. Aio, trained by Hope, won the principal event of the day, and George also steered Rainbow, the winner of the Welter; whilst Lindsay rode three winners during the day. That handsome fraud, Goosander, again put her connections and supporters in a hole by her inglorious display at Danevirke this week. The entries for the Hawke’s Bay Cup and Railway Stakes, to be decided at the March meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club show a slight falling off as compared to those of last year, the figures being: Cup, 1895, 26 entries; 1896, 25 entries ; Railway Stakes, 1895, 27 entries ; 1896, 22 entries. Brooklet and Tbe Brook are engaged in both events, and Messrs. Douglas and Quinlivan both claim these as their nominations.

The Shrew has been turned out, and with Wikitoria on the sick list the team presided over by Vincent will not be so formidable as of yore, as he will only have Torpinaand the Dreadnought —Clara filly, Clarice, to do service for the Moeller syndicate. [by wire.] February 4. Mr W. Douglas has removed bis horses in training from George Hope, and in future J. Munn will have charge of them. The Hawke’s Bay Plumpton Coursing Club have received thirty-two nominations for their Grand National Challenge Stakes, to be held in September. Messrs. Roulston, Swan, Proffitt, Lopdale, Rogers, J. Wilson, McCartney, Surman, and Caulton each have a double nomination. The following are my selections for the Town and Suburban Meeting : —Maiden,Maid Marion ; Trial Hurdles, Valetta ; February, Martyrdom ; Taradale, Kauri Gum ; Hurdles, Hilda II.; Flying, Moira ; Welter, Tokatea.

Mr Stead’s Maxim — Auray colt, Mauser, is named after a magazine bolt-gun used in the German army. The Nordenfeldt horse, Lebel, is named after a magazine gun used in the French army.
