Our Illustrations.
The recent Spring Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club forms the subject of several illustrations in this w’eek’s issue. The pictures were taken by Mr Hardie Shaw’, and include life-like representations of The Miser (by Puriri— Germaine), winner of the Hutt Park Spring Handicap, and Couranto (by Patriarch —Quickstep), who scored so decidedly in the First Hurdle Race. On the same page (9) will be found two snap - shots, one of which has for its central figure Mr Redwood, of Blenheim, “ the Father of the N.Z. Turf.” Mr H. M. Lyon, the club’s energetic secretary, figures in the other picture. On page 7 will be found representations of the finish for the Hutt Park Spring Handicap, start for the Welter Handicap, and the saddling paddock at the Hutt. Three of our pictures this week are in connection with the Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club’s Spring Meeting, and were taken by Messrs. Billows and Smith, the well-known photographers of High Street, Carterton. Mr J. Nixon’s three-year-old chestnut filly, Selma (J. Reid in the saddle) is the first winner of the recently inaugurated Wairarapa Guineas, and is by Petroleum (half-brother to Hotchkiss) from Belinda. The picture of Mr Fred Pearce’s honest horse, Cyrus 11., winner of the Hunters’ Steeplechase, is lifelike. Mr Pearce is one of the most enthusiastic followers of the Wairarapa hounds, and of course always rides his own horse in Hunt Club events. Probably the best performance of Cyrus 11. (12.3, owner up) was winning the United Hunt Club Steeplechase, three miles and a half, at Wellington, on July 13th last, defeating Mozel 12.5, and Seddon 11.12. The picture of the grandstand and stewards’ stand gives some idea of the accommodation provided at the TaratahiCarterton Meeting, and as all these improvements have been effected quite recently, and a large amount of money expended in railing the course right round and providing a training track, it is sufficient evidence that the club are desirous of making a bid for the premiership of the Wairarapa racing clnbs. The view of the Wairarapa Racing Club’s grandstands at Tauherenikau (Featherston), with the native bush in the background, makes a pretty picture. The horse in the foreground is Mr Donald’s grey gelding, Mutineer, who has won several cross-country events.
