Athletics.
The date of tha Auckland Club’s athletic carnival has been altered from December 8 to November 24. The North Shore Club are first in the field their date being fixed for November 3. I hear that Alf Burton will not be a competitor at the spring meetings. Alf has been ordered by the doctor to take a spell from the track. Thomas, who until lately held the New Zealand mile walking record, is at present iW Auckland, and will take part in the walking events. Tommy Roberts, who is at present in Sydney, has thrown in his lot with the Sydney Harriers. He entered for the amateur 100yds event at the Lillie Bridge Sports on Saturday last, and was handicapped to run from scratch. The handicapper has evidently judged Tommy’s sprinting capabilities by his performances over the ‘ sticks.’ An amateur athletic club has been formed at Te Awamutu. The club holds
its first carnival on November 9th, and is to be affiliated to the N.Z.A.A.A. I hear that Mr F. W. Edwards has been offered the position of starter to the A.A.A. and Cycle Club for the coming season. Mr Edwards has not decided whether he will accept the position. E. O. Bredin, in an attempt to lower the half-mile amateur record, cut out the distance in imin 56 i-sth sec.
