The Mangawhare Cricket Club have elected office bearers for the present season as follows:—President, Dr Norton ; vice-presidents, Messrs Barclay, Brookfield, Corcoran. Dargarville, Dennin, A. E. Harding, W. Marriner, R. Mitchelson, J. Mitchelson, McLean, McLeod, Rogers, M. Harding and J. A. Walker; committee, Messrs Harding, Mansill, and Pilkington; secretary, Mr Bankhart, Mr Mansill was appointed practice captain. The Eden and Epsom Lawn Tennis Club held their annual meeting on Monday evening and the secretary’s report which was adopted showed the club was making steady progress. Amongst other things the report stated the lawns of the club will be handed over to the Association during Christmas week for the New Zealand Tournament which will be held in Auckland for the first time. It has been definitely arranged that the Corbett-Mitchell contest shall take place at the Coney Island Club, New York, on December 18th.

The Australian fighter, Jim Hall, has challenged Bob Fitzsimmons to meet him in December next. The latter has not yet accepted the invitation. A boxing match is being arranged between Harry Laing, the New Zea lander, and Mick Dooley for the best of ten rounds. The fight will take place at the Australian Gymnastic Club, and will be for a purse of £ 100. The report read at the annual general meeting of the Devonport Lawn Tennis Club shows the finances of the club to be in a healthy condition. Alter the report was adopted, Mr P. H. Mason was elected president, M. F. J. Whittaker hon. secretary and treasurers. Messrs H. Macky. Frater, Keals, Mason, Allport. Murchie, Gordon, Mesdames Skardon and Keals were elected member of the committee. The club intend opening the season early next month.

The return football match between the Auckland College and Grammar School and Queen’s College was held on Friday last, and resulted in a win for the former by 24 points to nil. The Wellington Regatta Committee have decided to hold an autumn regatta two days after the championship meeting at Picton in the event of the Rowing Association agreeing to hold this season’s championship events in that centre. Mr J. G. Rule has been appointed secretary, and Mr S Waters treasurer. The committee elected to carry out the Ponsonby Regatta, to be held on Saturday, December 2nd, met in the Ponsonby Club Hotel this week. Canvassers were appointed for the various streets, and it was reported several prizes had already been donated, amongst them being Messrs Reid and Clare, the boatbuilders, who had contributed £lO. A Sydney cyclist named Vider has lowered the New South Wales bicycle road record for 100 miles by doing the distance in seven hours and three minutes.

C. Weston, the sprinter, did a couple of trial spins over the 1 ooyds track on the Ellerslie racecourse last Saturday afternoon. In the first effort he cut out the distance in io£sec. and in the second the watch showed 10 2-sth secs. The team of athletes picked to represent New Zealand at the First Australasian Championship Meeting, to be held in Melbourne next month, will leave Dunedin by the s.s. Mararoa on the 27th inst.

The veteran Australian boxer Peter Newton does not appear to be content with his victory over Abe Hicken, another aged follower of the ‘ manly sport.’ Newton now fight Larry Foley, a retired champion, and has posted a forfeit of to make a match for any amount. Foley is quite willing, and if the match comes off, it should be any odds on him.

Mr A. Lett, of Wellington, has invented a water cycle, which, if it can accomplish all its inventor claims for it should become popular. The cycle consists of two air tight cigar shaped cylinders 15 feet in length and about 3 feet apart. The working part of an ordinary safely bicycle is mounted on the framework between the tubes, and the propelling force is obtained from small paddle wheels. Mr Lett states he can send his cycle along at the rate of ten miles an hour, with no more exertion than is required to attain the same speed on an ordinary machine. The New South Wales champion, W. L. Kerr, won the one and ten mile championships of Ausiralia at Brisbane on the 7th inst. Kerr recently made an unsuccessful attempt at North Shore, Sydney, to break W. J S. Hayward’s mile record of 2min 25 2-sth sec. Kerr’s time was 2min 28 4-sth sec, or 3 2-sth lees behind the New Zealander’s time.

We learn from a London sporting exchange that Billy Murphy, the New Zealand fighter, is in the hospital at Newark, the result of his fight with Ed. Listman in that city. The bout was declared a draw at the end of four rounds, but in one of the rounds Listman landed on Murphy’s short ribs,injuring him severely, and causing him great pain. The annual meeting of the Auckland Swimming Club was held at the Harbour Board offices, Mr J. Baker in the chair. The annual report, which was a most favourable one, stated amongst other things, that Mr H. J. Bailey, who had been selected to compete in the champion events at Christchurch, had succeeded in carrying off the 220yds, 440yds, and the half mile championship of New Zealand. Mr F. Hedges, another member of the club, had succeeded in gaining the 100 yds championship of New Zealand at the Hamilton sports. The report and balance sheet were adopted, and office bearers elected as follows:—President, Mr J. M.

Upton with the Marshall-Ehren-friend trophy for his success in the three events for which the cup had been presented.
