October 10th. At the Agricultural and Pastoral Show Dreadnought (Chester —Trafalgar) took first and champion amongst the stallions, and Lorelei (Leolinus —Naiad) was adjudged the best of the mares. She belongs to Captain Russell, but was bred by Mr Stead. Captain Russell’s Falconet (Musket —Lyrebird) took the prize in the four-vear-old mare class. The Hon. J.D. Ormond’s yearlingfilly, by Dunlop—Straightshot), the Hon. Captain Russell’s yearling colt, by Henchman— Lorelei, Mr W. Douglas’ colt, by Torpedo —Lopeki, and the same gentleman’s two year-old filly, by Torpedo —Bonny Blink, also took first prizes.
Sternchaser has been backed for a lot of money in New Zealand for the Melbourne Cup. If he wins, thousands upon thousands of pounds will come to Hawke’s Bay. Stanmoor goes to Wanganui for the Derby. St. Hippo and Forme go on to Christchurch from here.
Lady Florin has dropped a foal to Dreadnought. Mosquetaire and Torpedo were not exhibited at the show.
A great many people have got knocked who backed Merganser and Riversdale for the New Zealand Cup. Satyr has broken down
If St, Anthony wins the New Zealand Cup he is a better horse than I think he is.
Loyalty will fight the Melbourne Cup right out and will get a place. Dilemma will win the New Zealand Gup. Ua could have beaten Rosefeldt in the big money event to-day. St. Kevin wants a lot of training yet. He will be a great colt.
