Taranaki Anniversary Meeting.

(from our own correspondent.) First Day—Thursday, Feb. 23. The Taranaki Anniversary Meeting was started on Thursday. The weather was very uninviting, a south-east gale (a regular black fellow) blowing guns all the day. Fortunately, however, the rain held off, and the day’s programme was gone through without the discomfort attendant on a moist state of the atmosphere. There were about 1400 persons on the course. Messrs. Hill and Poole worked the machine, and handled £2768 during the day. Mr G. Gibson made his debut as starter, and for a beginner he did very well. The programme was started with the Handicap Hurdles, miles, for which only three went to the post. The betting on the three was pretty even. Whalebone led into the straight when Songster caught him, but the latter swerved at the last hurdle, and it took Holmes all his time to get his mount going again, and he just managed to squeeze home from Whalebone by a head. Tattler ran an arrant deceiver, jumping slovenly and refusing to exert himself. Five saddled out for the Hack Hurdles, about 11 miles. Union Jack was installed favourite. Union Jack and Lord John (a “ new coon” from Jay Russell’s show) ran locked together round the back, but at the second last hurdle the latter fell, and Union Jack then came on and won with a bit to spare from Darebin, Pembroke being an indifferent third. Lord John and Cook, the rider, were not injured. During the progress of this race, when Union Jack and Lord John were racing together, “Jay,” who had an elevated stand on the lawn rails, addressed a few remarks to the occupants of the grand-stand, calling out “ Union Jack.” However, when Lord John fell “ Jay” was condescending enough to tell the “ Union-Jackites” that they could continue their vociferating. The third race on the programme was the T.J.C. Handicap, 1£ miles, for which eight went to the post. Krina was favourite, then Rangipuhi, next Boulanger, and fourth Fraternite (who was ridden by G. Robson, of Glenloth renown). The race is very easily described. On the drop of the flag Tulloch

and Durus sailed away with the lead, with the others a few lengths away. Tulloch kept a bit ahead of Durus, and he led them merrily along, Hodson letting him slip along at a great bat. At the bend for the straight the followers made their efforts, but dropped back, except Durus and Krina, who chased home the son of Sword Dance, but Tulloch won with a bit to spare by a couple of lengths. Krina, who was distressed, just beat Durus by a head for second place. The race was a regular “ boil-over.” For the Hack Flat, 1 mile, thirteen horses came out. Cutlass led into the straight, but Thunderboltput in his claim, and at the same time Riley woke up Melas with the whip, and coming up in the middle he caught Thunderbolt, and beat him by half a length ; Cutlass a fair third. After his win Tulloch was installed a hot favourite for the Welter, 1 mile, seven others opposing him, Musket being next in demand. Shortly after the start Tulloch wrested the lead from Sirius and kept it ever afterwards, winning by a length from Musket. The Hack Scurry, 5 furlongs, catch weights, brought out seven hacks. Maroro was favourite. Amour led to within a few yards of the post, when Despised cut her down and won by half a length, paying the second best dividend of the day. Five went out for the Flying, Rebellion, Lottie and Eve being pretty evenly backed. The two-year-old won comfortably from Fraternite, with Rebellion third. Second Day—Saturday, Feb. 25. | BY WIRE. J The second day of the Taranaki J.C.’s Anniversary Meeting, postponed from Friday, took place on Saturday. The weather was wretched, rain falling continuously all day, and the track, lawn and paddock were mud and slush pools.
