; Monday, January 2nd.

((from our own correspondent.)

The Ormond Races, which were held on 'the New Year’s Day holiday, attracted a good attendance, though the weather was inclement in the morning. However, in the afternoon it cleared up. There was some capital racing, and the good sum of £ 1,140 went through the totalisator. This is more than the Club handled last year.

The Handicap Hurdle Race of 30S0VS, one and three-quarter miles, was contested by five horses, with Herbert, 11.0, and Arena, 9.6, very evenly backed. Arena had the race in hand by the time the home turn was reached, and won easily, Warrigal, 9.6, was third. Time, 4mm 4 2-sth sec. Dividend, £$ 17s.

The Hack Hurdles of iosovs, one mile, brought out a quintette. Engakuri and Lady Florin divided favouritism, and Lady Florin, 10.7, won by half-a-length from Starlight, 9.0. Engakuri, 10.7, was third, and might have been closer had his rider not lain so fai out of his ground in the early part of the race. The time was returned as 2min igsec, and the dividend was £2 1 os. The Maiden Scurry of iosovs, four furlongs, went to The Joker, with Waggoner second and Happy Jack third. There were five other starters. The time was imin 2.5 th sec, and the dividend £3 is. There was a good field of half-a-dozen for the Flying Handicap of 25SOVS, six furlongs. Cairngorm, 8.2, was favourite, with Pekapu, 8.9, next in demand. The start was not a good one, Maroon, 7.6, having the best of it, while HexhamJ 6.9, and Kotero, 6.7, were left a long way in the rear. Cairngorm was in front three furlongs from home, and stalling off Pekapu in the straight, he won by a length. He pulled up very lame. Dangar, 6.7, was third. Time, imin 33 i-sthsec. Dividend, Bs. Engakuri, 10.9, was favourite for the Welter Handicap of 15SOVS, one mile, and he won by a length after a good finish with Avis, 12.2, who made a big struggle under his heavy weight. Arena, 10.7, was third. Dividend, £2 15s. For the Ormond Cup Handicap of 40 sovs, one mile and a-quarter, the following seven came out: —Fitz James 8.6, Pekapu 8.6, Lord Raven 8.0, Maroon 8.0, Herbert 7.9, Hexham 6.12, and Dangar 6.9. Fitz James was favourite, with Pekapu next in demand. Herbert and Hexham made the running, with Pekapu and Dangar next, and Maroon last. The field lay well together till the turn for home, where it was plain that the race lay between Herbert, Dangar, and Pekapu. The latter came with a late run, but could not get up, and Herbert won by a length from Dangar, with Pekapu third. Time, zmin 39 3-sth sec. Dividend, £6 13s.
