Gisborne Racing Club’s Summer Meeting.

First Day—Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The Gisborne Racing Club’s Summer Meeting commenced to-day. The weather was threatening during the morning but it cleared off later on, and the afternoon was fine.

The Gisborne Handicap of 40S0VS, one mile, was won by Avis, 8.4, who just got home from Retribution. 6.7, on the post. Dangar, 6.7, was third. The dividend was £\ 16s. The Flying Handicap of sosovs, six furlongs, was won very comfortably by Ua, 8.7, as was only to be expected after the form she displayed at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s Meeting last week. Playmate, 6.12, was second, and The Sharper, 6.12, third. Again had backers to lay odds-on, Uaonly returning £\ 16s out of the machine.

The First Hurdle Handicap of 65SOVS, two miles, saw Chester, 10.11, again to the fore. He won very easily from Orena, 9.0, and Cloth of Gold, 9.4, was third. The dividend was another oddson one— £l 7s. The President’s Handicap of 13OSOVS, one mile and a half, fell to another animal

that had won at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s Meeting, Huerfana, who had 7.5 up. It was a good race. Pani, was second, and Kapua, 7.2, third. The time was zmin 4i£sec, and the dividend £1 ’3 s - The Park Stakes Handicap of sosovs, one mile and a distance, was won by Avis, 7.10, after a splendid finish with Albert, 7.4. Zanzibar, 8.0, was third. The dividend was £1 15s. The total put through the machines during the day was /’2201.

Second Day, Wednesday, Jan. 18. The weather was good, but the attendance not so large as on the previous day. The County Stakes Handicap of 40 soy&.j 7 furlongs, was won by Maroon, with Rekapu second and Dangar third. It waS a good race. Dividend 4s. In the Stewards’ Handicap "of 50 sovs., one mile and a distance, U)a was once more in winning form and g£t home as she liked from Avis and Albert. Dividend £1 Bs. / The Second Hurdle/'Race of 55 sovs. one mile and a quarter, was won easily by Arena, upsetting two better backed ones in Chester ,4nd Engakuri. The dividend was £4/12s. The Grandstand Handicap of 80 sovs., one mile and a quarter, went to Pekapu, with Pani and Huerfana in the other places. It wfas a good finish between first and second. The dividend was the rich one oCg 41 13s. Retribu/ion won the Forced Handicap of 30 sovs., one mile, paying a dividend of £3- 7 _
