Whangarei Races.

First Day—Friday, Jan. 6. \ * (from our own correspondent.) , These races, postponed from the 2nd inst., commenced on the above date. The weather was bad, there was a poor attendance, and the totalisator was very meagrely patronised, a trifle under beiug all that went through. The Maiden Handicap of iosovs, one mile and a distance, was won by Mr H. A. Mclnnes’ Chester, wno had only two opponents to beat —Zanzibar and Ethel, and he woh easily. The Hurdle Handicap of 20 sovs, one mile and three-quarters, was only contested by Malabar and Kapai. Both fell when about half the journey had been got over, but their riders remounted them, Malabar being quickest away and winning easily. Chance It won the Pony Race of iosovs, 7 furlongs. The Whangarei Cup of 40SOVS, one mile and three-quarters, brought out Larrikin, Alma, Kupe, and Pakeha. Kupe made most of the running, but was done with at the end of a mile, and then ran inside a post and was pulled up. Alma won very comfortably from Pakeha. Chester won the Hack Race of iosovs, 6 furlongs, very easily, and in similar fashion Alma took the Flying Handicap of 15SOVS, 7 furlongs.

Second Day—Saturday, Jan. 7. ■ <' fit . It rained in the morning, but cleared up in the afternoon. The attei\dance was fairly good. Sultan, scratch, beat his only opponent Count very easily in the Trotting Handicap of iosovs, two miles. Malabar had an easy victory in the Steeplechase of 30S0VS, three miles, all the others falling at intervals. They were remounted,; though, and Chester finished second and Kapai third. The best race of the day was between Alma and Pakeha in the Kensington Park Plate of 25sovs, one and aquarter mile, Alma winning by half-£-length. Bravo was third. Miss King beat five others in the Hurry Scurry, and the Farewell Handicap was an easy thing for Alma, with Pakeha second and Kupe third.
