October 5. Subscription Dance. On Friday the rain came down in torIrehts, which much affected the attendance at the subscription dance at the Foresters’ Hall, The committee, though small in numbers, were untiring in their efforts to make the dance a success, and included Misses James (2), AVake (2), Bayley, Curtis, Anderson. Farewell Social. On Thursday evening the parishioners of Holy Tri nils Church tendered to Mr E. W. Lewis a farewell social and presented him with a purse of sovereigns prior to his departure for Auckland. Mr Lewis’s intention is to enter St. John’s College as a theological student. He has for some veal’s been an enthusiastic and untiring worker in all matters connected With the church here. Everyone wishes him success in his new field of labour. Bridge. Mrs Fookes entertained a few friends nt a bridge party on Thursday evening. Golf.

The Stratford Golf Chib closed their ee.isun on Thursday, when mixed fourmonies were played. The winners were Alien Fuescll and Mr Ihiiackc. In the dual for the ladies’ championship Miss I*. Orbell boat Mias OrbeU.

Senior Cadets. A meeting of ladies was held on Thursday in connection with Mrs Godley’s scheme for providing prizes for senior cadets. Several very practical suggestions were made which, if acted upon, ought-to bring about the result aimed at. Personal. Mr Aldred, Inspector of Banks of New Zealand, and Mrs Aldred, have been spending some days in Stratford. Mrs H. Niccol (Ashburton) is visiting Miss J. C. Fookes. Dr and Mrs Menzies were passengers to Auckland on Saturday via the Main Trunk. Mr Hemingway (Patea) was a visitor to Stratford on Thursday to be present at the social given to Mr Lewis. Mrs !■'. \\". Wake has gone to Wanganui for a short holiday'. Mrs Dunean (Wanganui) is the guest of her daughter, Mrs W. H. Young. Mr G. Hedditch, of the Bank of Australasia, has been transferred to Wellington.
