August 8. The Military Ball. The Garrison Ball at the Garrison Hall last Thursday was attended by the largest gathering which has ever lieen seen at a similar function in Gisborne. A Cup and Saucer Tea. A jolly little tea was held on Monday afternon at the Piccadilly Tea Rooms. It was tendered to Miss Bright, in lioii.our of her approaching marriage, which takes place this month, by the members of the Gisborne Lawn Tennis Club, of which she was a very popular member* Eaeli guest presented a cup and sauce't - , on arrival. Much fun was evoked by

guessing competition. Mrs R. Bonrke and Miss M. Rees tied for first place, and in the draw Mrs Bonrke won. Amongst those present were: Mesdames Ruby, Adair, Bennett, Murray, Bourke, O’Meara. Maclernon, Crawford, Barlow, Ewseke, Scott, Maude, Traill, and McCredie, Misses Bright, Sherratt (2), MeCredie, Rees, Murray, Coleman, Davies, Wyllie, Robinson, Adams, and Do Lautour. Afternoon Tea. On Wednesday Mrs T. A. Coleman, senr., gave an enjoyable tea for Miss Bright. Tile hostess was gowned in a handsome black merveilleux, with jet trimming; Mrs T. A. Coleman, juiir., smart blue tailor-made, blue felt hat with green wings; Miss ( oleman, dainty pink ninon, with lace trimming; Miss Bright, smart tweed costume,' black velvet hat lined with white satin, and trimmed with cerise Howers. A guessing competition caused much merriment, and was won by Miss It. Watkins, while Miss 11. Black came second. Amongst the guests were: Mrs Ruby, Misses Watkins, Maclaurin, Faulkner (2), De Lautour (2), Evans Bennett, Wachsmann, Shepherd, Davies (2), Tinker (2), Townley, Black (2), Bradley, Taylor, Lewis, and Bull. Personal. Sir James Carroll left for the South on- Sunday. Miss E. Williams, Russell-street, is visiting friends in Sydney.
