PERSONAL NOTES.

Messrs. C. M. Fowlds and W. 11. Catighey, of Auckland, returned last week From a visit to the Ola country. Mr. J. L. Salmond, architect to the Union Steamship Company, arrived from Suva by the Zealandia last week. Messrs. F. B. and W. H. Winstoue, of Auckland, who have been on a tour abroad, returned last week by the Zealandia. Mr. F. Minnett, Inspector of the New Zealand Insurance Company, left for Australia by the Zealandia last week. He was accompanied by Mrs. Minnett. Dr. W. 11. Fitchett, of Melbourne, and (Mrs. Fitchett, who are resuming from a visit to Canada and Great Britain, were passengers by the Zealandia from Vancouver. Dr. P. C. Ilainmersley, who recently underwent a somewhat serious operation at the Mt. Pleasant private hospital, is now making very satisfactory progress towards recovery. Mr. Angus Mclnnes, fit the North River, Waiuku, ager 71, died last week, after having been in failing health for the past few months. Last week lie met with an accident while milking a voting heifer, which knocked him down and kicked him several times. A Dunedin Press Association telegram states that Miss F. M. Allan, M.A., has been appointed temporary lady principal of the Otago Girls’ High School, vice Miss Marchant, resigned. Miss Allan is now senior assistant-mistress. Amongst those who passed grades three and four at the recent examinations held in connection with the Anglican Board of Theological .Studies at Wellington, was the Rev. J. C. Calder, eon of Archdeacon Cialder.

The Hon. Sir John Findlay’s resignation of his seat as a member of the Legislative Council is gazetted as from November 20th.

Very general regret is felt on the Wairoa at the transfer of Mr. C. H. Gould, local manager of the National Bank, from Dargaville to Napier. Mr. T. F. Hugo, of Wellington, Inspector of Fire Brigades, is at present on a visit to Auckland. He is staying at the Central Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Edwards, of Nelson, who have been staying at the Grand Hotel for a few days, returned .South last week. Mr. and Mrs. Channing Buckland, of Cambridge, who have been staying at the Central Hotel, left for their home by the Rotorua express on Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Crawford, of Wellington, who returned from a trip to England by the Moldavia on Friday, left for Wellington on Monday. Mr. Eric C. Gold Smith (Commissioner of Crown Lands), who is shortly to retire on superannuation, will be suoeeeded by Mr. 11. M. Skeet, who has held a similar position in Southland for the past two and a-half years.

Sir Joseph Ward, accompanied by Lady Ward, Miss Ward, and his private secretaries, Messrs. J. Hislop and F. G. Matthews, arrived in Aucklend on Stin-

day morning from Te Arolia, and left for New Plymouth in the afternoon. The following appointments are gazetted: —Meeare. H. L. P. Dyett, D. Netson, and A. F. Waters, assistant surveyors in the Department of Lands; Mr. 11. T. MoCardell, chief draughtsman tin the head office of the Department of Lands; Mr. C. E. Armstrong, district engineer in the Public Works Department. Funeral of Mr. Kirker. The body of the late Mr. James Kirker, who died last month at Vancouver, was buried last week at Purewa, the service at the deceased’s residence, Wal-lace-street, Ponsonby, and at the graveside, being conducted by the Rev. Isaac Jolly, of the St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church. The body was followed to the grave by a large number of prominent citizens, including the representatives of all the insurance offices in Auckland, and his Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. J. Parr). The chief mourners were Messrs. T. and W. Kirker (brothers), John James Kirker, jun., H. R., D. R., and A. H. Kirker (sons), Misses M. Q. and C. Kirker (daughters). Mrs. Kirker was accompanied by her sister, Miss Lockie, and Miss H. Wilson, the nurse who attended Mr. Kirker from the time he was taken ill in Toronto, was also present. Among the large number of beautiful wreaths were those from the Right. Hon. the Premier and Lady Ward, Mr. Arthur M. Myers, M.P., the Auckland Golf Cluib, the Auckland Horticultural Society, and the Ponsonby Bowling dub, (with all of which the deceased was iconaiected); Lieut.-Colonel G. W. S. Patterson and Lieut-Col. W. H. Hazard (representing the N.Z. Garrison Artillery), the general manager and directors of the New Zealand Insurance Co., and others from Auckland business firms, the various insurance companies, and private friends, the total number sent being over a hundred.

The cortege was a long one, most of Auckland’s leading citizens being present, including Sir John Findlay (representing the Government), Hon. Seymour Thorne George, Mr. A. M. Myers, and Mr. C. H. Poole.
