HASTINGS.

February 2. Socially, Hastings is very quiet, the only stir being caused by the cheap sales, and, judging by the large numbers of ■buyers, I am sure the tradesmen must be doing good business. Many campers have returned from the Grange beach—Mrs. Hurley and family, Mrs. Beyers and family, Mrs. C. Scott and family, Mrs. Haise and family, Mrs. M. Smith and family. Some stylish street frocks I have noticed lately are:—Mrs. Tosswill, lettucegreen and cream spotted silk, hobble skirt banded with plain lettuce silk, lace yoke and sleeves, large black hat; Mrs. W. Stead, dark caramel brown Russian costume, smart black hat; Misses Munroe, pretty white muslin frocks, with lace insertion, large black mushroom hats wreathed with white daisies; Miss Newbigen, green embroidered linen, hat en suite; Mrs. Scott, amethyst linen hobble frock, large amethyst straw hat banded with black velvet and -bunch of black daisies; Mrs. McLeod, light caramel brown linen coat and skirt, bucket straw hat with large bows of caramel silk; Mrs. De Lisle, white frock, embroidered, large black hat; Mrs. Lewis, black and white check hobble frock, black straw bucket hat with large black bows. Personal. Dr. and Mrs. Macdonell have returned from Wellington. Mrs. Nairn and family have returned from Norsewood. Mrs. Seannell and family have returned from Norsewood. Mr. and Mrs. J. Faulkner have returned from Rotorua. Mrs. Gascoyne has her niece, Miss Carr (England), staying with her. Mrs. Cameron has returned to Masterton. The many friends of Mr. Charlie Hobbs will be pleased to learn that he is making great progress with his studies for the ministry, and from latest news received was going to spend the Christmas -holidays with Sir Wm. and Lady

Russel, in Somerset.
