December 21. Musical Evening. A musical evening was given on Saturday by Airs. H. H. Loughnan (Avonside). Songs were sung by Airs. Gower (Burns and Messrs. Wood, Inglis, Alwright and W. Day. The instrumentalists were Messrs. Lewin, Loughnan, and liunz. Mrs. Loughnan wore a gown o* pale blue satin and chiffon; Aliss Loughnan, white ninon with insertions of lace* Airs. George Harper, black satin and net; Mrs. Gower Burns, lemon brocaded satin; Mrs. Cox, pale pink taffetas oral cream lace; Airs. Symes, violet ninon and jet; Airs. Inglis, frock of cinnamon taffetas; Airs. Day, black silk relieved with pale 'blue velvet; Airs. Murray, black silk and lace; Airs. Finch, reseda green crepe de chine; Airs. Bunz, cream ninon with pipings and hem of pale pink satin; Aliss Durant, pearl grey satin; Aliss Alorrison (Auckland), frock of mauve crepe de chine relieved with bream net; Miss Cracroft Wilson, black lace relieved with jet; Aliss Symes, robe Of cream lace over cream silk; Aliss Rusisell, black and white striped Grenadine with belt of tangerine yellow; Aliss Devenish AfeareWJ white taffetas and silk embroidery; Airs. Alichael Campbell, black satin nnd cream lace; Aliss Campbell, pale pink voile relieved with cream luce. Others present included Alessrs. JTarpen, Wood, Lewin, Inglis, W. Day, Bunz, Cox, Murray and Alwright.

A small musicale was given by Mrs. "Walter Stringer at her apartments in "Warwick House. Songs were sung by Miss May Pudney who has for some time been studying music at Home and on the Continent, and, It is said, intends returning to England shortly. Miss Fairhurst also sang. Mrs. Stringer, Mrs. G. Fairhurst, and Mr. Lancelot Lewin played the piano. Breaking Up for the Holidays. Schools breaking up for the Christmas holidays and children’s parties are at present the only entertainments. Christ’s College Grammar School breaking-up and prize-giving took place on Monday afternoon. There was a very large attendance of parents and friends of the boys. In the evening Mrs. Northcote, of Culverden, gave a children’s dance at Miss Cox’s Assembly Boom, Hereford-street, at which most of the College boys were present. The hall was gaily decorated, and a very pleasant evening was spent. Children's Party.

On Tuesday afternoon a children’s party was given by Airs. Arnot AleKellar (Park-terrace). A marquee was erected on the lawn for the refreshments. Several grown-ups were present to assist in amusing and looking after the children. All kinds of out-of-door games were played, and then came the unveiling of a huge Christmas-tree, from which each child received a gift to carry away with them. A Picnic. On Tuesday Airs. Free (Fendalton) gave a picnic, and invited a number of young people. They took the tram to Sumner, and from there walked over the hills to Taylor’s Alistake, where they made Billy tea and thoroughly enjoyed a delightful picnic. A musical afternoon was given by Airs. Gower Burns at her residence, Kil-more-street, in honour of Airs. Westmacott, of Woodbury. Personal. Airs. Al. Lewin (Spaxton Down*, Alethven) is in Christchurch with Airs. Thornton, of Reefton, who has been staying with Airs. Lewin, and who is returning to Reefton on Thursday. Air. and Airs. George Lee and Aliss Lee (Sydney) have arrived in Christchurch. They are the guests of Mrs. Palmer, “Woodford,” Papanui-road. Air. and Airs. Aufrere Fenwick (Dunedin) are in Christchurch. Airs. J. Douglas (Waikari) has been staying with Aliss Humphreys at Fendalton. Aliss Helmore has returned to Christchurch from a visit to England. Air. and Airs. Alaurice Harper, who have been staying with the Dean of Christchurch, have returned to Timaru. Aliss Boyle (Christchurch) has returned from a visit South. Aliss E. Raine (Timaru) is the guest of Airs. E. Turrell (Christchurch). Airs. J. Barker (Geraldine) has been staying with Airs. Boyle at Riccarton. Recent visitors to Christchurch include: Mrs. J. C. Grigg (Longbeach), Airs. Percy Elworthy (Timaru) ; Aliss Brownjohn (England) is the guest of Airs. George Helmore (Fendalton) ; Air. and Airs. R. H. Rhodes and Aliss Rhodes (Blue Cliffs), en route for England;, Aliss Bathgate (Dunedin), Aliss Peache (Mt. Somers), Air. and Airs. A. Holmes (Rakaia).
