Russell's request that, as Wellington and Auckland have viceregal residences, permanent residences for his Excellency should also be established in the “beautiful, healthy and invigorating cities of Christchurch and Dunedin,” Sir Joseph Ward said he concurred as to the attractiveness and suitability of the two charming cities referred to, but there was no practical need for further residential places for the Governor, when such admirable houses in each of the localities named could be obtained from time to time as required.
