July 7. Euchre Tournament. The sixth of the series carried' on by the Fire Brigade was held on Monday evening, and despite the weather, the slushy streets, and the darkness, there was a very good attendance, Mrs. Tarrant won the ladies’ prize, and Mr. F. Rouse the men's. The Weather. The Rev. Mr. Bates has proved himself a true prophet in this country, and though there was no wind to speak of, the rain made up for all deficiencies, and eame down for nearly three days and nights in torrential quantity. The usual gentle Waitohi stream was a rushing torrent, and lakelets adorned the lowlying parts of the town. No damage was done locally.

Obituary. Mrs. Elba Jackson, of Tc Awaite, Tory Channel, died at her daughters |(Mrs. W. Bragg) residence, Mount (Pleasant, last week. Mrs. Jackson came <o the Soundrt long before the separation, and had cheerfully endured all the toardJiijM which were the lot of the first colonists. Her husband, who predeceased In r several years ago, captained a whaler, and Mrs. Jackson frequently ■witnessed the chase, amt capture of those mighty denizens of the deep. She had several children —all well-known na n and women of to-day. She leaves a long line of descendants in her grand children and great-grandchildren.
