THAMES.

June 25. A Concert. The Thames Ladies* Musical Society gave their final concert in the Oddfellows* Hall on Tuesday. 14th June, and many were the regrets that it was the last, as the concerts of the Society have been most eagerly lucked forward to, not only for their educational value, but for the really good talent which they have brought out. Air Leo Whittaker, A.T. C.L. ami L.A.8., who formed and conducted the society, is taking over Mr S. K. Phillips’ musical practice in Auckland’, which has necessitated his giving up the conductorship, and his departure will be sincerely regretted by the musicloving public of Thames, as he has done a great deal to advance a taste for the best in music. The programme was a charming one throughout, the part songs being delightfully rendered, the two most appreciated by the audience being “Orpheus with his Lute” (Germaim) and “The Spinning (.horns.” from Wagner’s “Hying Dutchman,” the latter being delightfully crisp. Miss E. Read taking the solo. Aliss Murphy's solo, “A Summer Night,” was a fine item. Miss Whittaker playing the ’cello obligato tastefully. Another enjoyable item was the duet “Springtime.” by Misses Price and Gibbons. Air A. Gordon played two violin solos, and received emphatic encores. Mr Leo Whittaker played most artistically Chaminade’s “Antonine,” and as an encore Schumann’s “Night V ision.” both items being enthusiastically applauded. The stage was arranged as a drawingroom, the effect on entering the hall satisfying the most fastidious. Pots of beautiful maidenhair fern and pink and red camellias looked very tasteful against the rich drapings of strawberry and green Roman satin. Amongst the audience I noticed: Mesdames Bedford, Whittaker. O’Callaghan. Crease, Dodd. A. Price. McLaren, Court. W. Baker, Whitehouse. Nicholls. Lowe, W. Smith. Alisses Gibbons, Fremlin. Banks. McLaren. Hudson. Frazer. Baker. Whitehouse. Road. Whittaker, Wilkes. McGregor, Hirst, E. O’Callaghan. Bedford, Lowe. Stewart, Wilson, Edwards. Alorton, Thompson, McDermott, and many others.
