NEW PLYMOUTH.

. June 24. Afternoon Tea. Last Monday afternoon the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs Tiscli), assisted by the ladies subcommittee of the Anniversary Day Celebration Committee, entertained the veterans and pioneer settlers of the district at afternoon tea in the Brougham-street Hall. It had been previously postponed twice on account of bad weather and the late King Edward’s death, and. lastly, when hearing of the intended visit of H.M.s. Pioneer to the port, it was considered a good idea to bring the officers and crew of the warship into touch with the men and women who had laid the foundation of this prosperous district. Misfortune again attended them, for the warship was unable to stay long enough. Mr Tisch. however, was glad to see that so many had gathered to renew old acquaintance, and that so many were still hale and hearty. The hall was tastefully decorated, ami a most recherche tea was served in the off-rooms. About sixty or seventy veterans and pioneers were present, and a large number of other guests attended. The Hon. T. Kelly, M.L.C., and Messrs. H. Okey, M.P., and R. Cock, and Colonel Ellis made brief speeches. During the afternoon musical selections were given by Mrs Dowling, senr. (piano), Miss Dowling (violin), and vocal items were rendered by Mrs Maxwell and Miss F. Ward. A Small Dance. Last Friday evening 'Mrs. W. Penn gave a small dance to young people, the hostess being assisted by Misses D. Pedford ami A. Brewnter. Dancing was arranged in the dining and drawingrooms, while a most appetising supper ■was served in the breakfast-room. Mrs. Penn received her guests in black satin veiled in lace, relieved with scarlet roses on decolletage; Miss Penn, turquoise blue silk finished w’itla cream lace insertion; Miss E. Penn, pale heliotrope muslin trimmed with a darker shade of velvet; Miss K. Penn, pale pink silk; Miss G. Bewley, pale blue muslin; Miss W. Webster, pale pink muslin; Miss M. An Enjoyable Dance. '• Miss Bedford’s pupils held a dance in the Brougham-street Hall last Tuesday evening, and as the atmosphere was almost at freezing-point, dancing was indulged in with right good will. The sup-per-table was prettily decorated with holly berries and pale pink and white camellias. Amongst those present were; Miss Bedford, black chiffon taffetas; Mns. Walker, black satin with sequined berthe and front panel of skirt; Mrs. C. Weston, pale blue taffetas, decolletage finished with pale pink and blue floral guimpe; Miss Steuart, cream chiffon taffetas, draped skirt, finished with gold galon, corsage trimmed with same; Mies Cutfield, isaxe blue crepe de chine, cream chiffon chemisette; Miss Kingdon, rose pink silk; Miss T. McAllum, pale blue muslin; Miss Turner looked ' well in a cream chiffon taffetas, draped skirt, decolletage relieved with gold embroidered net ; Miss Sinclair, black velvet, real lace berthe: Miss E. McAllum, cream figured net, banded with silk; Mies Hanna, black satin, corsage braided with steel passementerie; Miss N. Mr." and Mrs. J. R. Steuart, who have been residing in New Plymouth for some months, left last week for Melbourne, where they will join Dr. Steuart (son), and reside there for a year or two. Mr. A. J. Hanna, of the Northern S.S. Co., Auckland, is spending his holidays at his home in New Plymouth. Mr. C. Zachariah, of the Public Trust Office, Wellington, has been appointed to succeed Mr. J. B. Jack, New Plymouth. who has been transferred to Wanganui. At a meeting of the Vestry of St. Mary’s Church last week, a letter was received from the Vicar, Rev. Mr. F. G. Evans, intimating that owing to indifferent health, he had reluctantly decided to ask the Bishop of the Diocese (Bishop Neligan) to accept his resignation sometime during this year. NANCY LEE.
