Alay 13. Gaieties Stopped. The universal mourning, which is being observed in consequence of the death of King Edward has, of course, put a stop to all gaieties.A Dance.
Last Friday the first of a series of four assembly dances, which have been arranged for by Airs. Gower-Burns, Airs. Walter G. Moore, and Airs. 11. A. Knight, tool; place at Miss Cox’s Assembly rooms, and was a great success; all the arrangements were perfect, and left nothing to be desired. Airs. Aloore wore a gown of black net appliqued with black velvet over white satin; Airs Burns, black moire relieved with garnitures of jet and sequins; Airs. Knight, black satin and lace. The guests included : Aliss Hanmer, wearing a frock of yellow satin with overskirt of white satin, striped chiffon; Aliss Al. Hanmer, pale blue satin, with touches of lace and silver embroidery; Aliss Boyle, black ninon and lace; Aliss Kitscn, bright blue crystalline silk; Aliss Knight, white satin and chiffon; Aliss N. Knight, cream satin with silver sequin trimming; Aliss Agnes Humphreys, frock of black ninon relieved with vieux rose velvet; Aliss Aloore, black net with touches of emerald green; Aliss D. Aloore, pale pink ninon with -pink sequined net; Aliss Symes, pale blue ninon, over white silk; Aliss Park, black crepe de chine relieved- with cream lace; Aliss G. Alerton, Wack net embroidered with shaded green sequins; Aliss Inman, cream satin with silver sequins; Aliss Thomas, vieux rose radium; Miss D. Anderson, rose-col-oured tulle with touches of pale blue; Aliss Prim, pale green satin and sequins; Aliss Wood, ivory net with touches of turquoise blue. Amongst the gentlemen present were: Alessrs. Wood, Anderson (2), Tryer, Gibson, Lees, Boys, Aitken, Butterworth, Godby, Fell, and Denniston. The ball-room was charmingly decorated with autumn leaves and palms. Afternoon Tea.
An afternoon tea was given at the •Shirley golf links last Thursday, when Airs. (Stevenson was the hostess. The guests included: Airs. J. D. Hall, Airs, and Aliss Thomas, Aliss Campbell. Aliss Alerton, Mrs. Bucker, All’s. C. Cooper, Airs. T. Cowlishaw, Airs. Nancarrow, Aliss Symes, Airs Bell, Airs Henry Wood, Airs. Pratt, Miss Cowlishaw, and Airs. W. Day. A golf match was played, which was won by Airs. T. Cowlishaw. Personal. Visitors to Christchurch include: Air. and Airs. Andrews (Nelson), Air. and Airs. Bealey (Horarata), Airs. Barnieoat (Wanganui), Airs. E. B. Alillton (Bireh Hill). Airs. Stilling (Dunedin) is (lie guest of Airs. Orbell (Cashel-street, Christchurch ). Aliss Phillips (“The Point”) has returned to Christchurch from Wellington. Aliss Elworthy has returned from her visit to Timarn. Air and Airs. Andrene have left Christchurch for Auckland.
Aliss Croxton (Christchurch) is visiting friends in Ashburton. Aliss Amy Murphy, who was to have sung the music of Alarguerite in “Faust” with the Alusical Union, left Christchurch yesterday for Sydney. The
concert was postponed in consequence of the King’s death, and Aliss AJurphy’o engagements in Sydney compelled her to go, which is a great disappointment to the musical world of Christchurch.
