PICTON.
The Irrepressible Holiday Make J. Picnics are still in the air. thou h the never-to-be depended-upon neatlnr has an unfortunate knack of interfering m some way and very often putting a stop to our outings altogether. However. two small ones jyere got off last week. One to Torea by launch: thence the party walked oyer the neck to Portage. and sought out a romantic spot under some big birch trees. There they boiled the, billy, ate their lunch. and watched the launches come and go on the beautiful Kenepuru Sound, and there they were caught by the inevitable rain, which came on suddenly. Fortunately they were within a short distance of the accommodation house, where Mr. Hunte’made them welcome. The partv were Mr. and Mrs. Rutherfurd (‘of Masterton >. Mrs. Allen. Mrs. Tickers, Dr. Ada Patterson, and Miss Patterson. Afternoon tea was a welcome interlude, and presently the rain ceased, and the party returned none the worse for the slight wetting. Another small party which would, but for the erratic weather, have been a large one. went to Kairiparipa. and had a good time with shelter close at hand. Among them were: Mesdames Seymour. Riddel?, Madsen. Pilmer, C. Philpotts. Lucena, and Misses Moynihan. Dawkins and Phil, potts (21. Bridge. Mr. and Mrs. Vickers gave a small bridge evening at the Bank of New Zealand on Monday evening. Mrs. Vickers wore a dark skirt, and white lace blouse; Mrs. Allen, black: Mrs. Le C'oeg. black nterv: Mrs. Pilmer. dark skirt and blouse; Mrs. Madsen, black, relieved with white; Miss Dawkins, dark skirt and white silk blouse embroidered with silk; Mr. A jokers and Air. Riddell. Several interesting rubbers were played off before supper, and then the party found plenty to talk about and laugh at. Personal. Mr. ami Airs. G. Rutherfurd have returned home to Wairere. Alasterton, after a pleasant visit to Picton.
Mr. C. N. Baeyertz. editor of the “Triad,” has been spending a short holiday in Pieton.
Mrs. T. Cawte (Mahakupawa) spent a few days in Picton last week. Mrs. J. Anderson, Mahan Sound, has gone to Wellington for a few days.
Mr. John Duncan. M.P.. and Mrs. Duncan paid a visit to Kaikoura recently to be present at the show. Mrs. Hosken is visiting her sister, Mrs. Toswell, in the Pelorus Sound. Mr. Hosken. Paymaster to the Fleet, is at present in England, and Mrs. Hosken is awaiting instructions to join him. Mr. Weir, of the Bank of New Zealand. N. 1., and Mrs. Weir have been spending a week or two at Portage. They intend coming on to Picton for the rest of their holiday. Mrs. and Miss Gregg were in Picton last week. Mrs. Gregg has returned to Mahakipawa, and Miss Gregg has gone to Wellington for a holiday. Dr. and Mrs. Nesbitt, late of Dunedin, are seriously thinking of taking up their abode in Picton. Messrs. James Speed. of Perth. West Australia, and Hugh Speed, of Wanganui, are on a visit to their people in Picton. A team of bowlers and a team of hockey players are visiting Nelson this Easter, and the rest of the population of our town are preparing for monster picnics and fishing parties in the Sound.
