HAMILTON.

February 11

Al Interesting Competition.

Quite interesting was the Amateur Photographic Competition of Mr. Mannings, which was decided this week, there being no less than 45 entries in the three classes. In the Landscape Class, Mr. W. Ran stead came first with a “Harvesting Scene,’ and Mrs. Douglas second with “A View of Auckland Harbour from the Domain.’’ In the Portrait and Studies from Animal Life. Mr. W. Ranstead was again first, and Miss Maunder second; while in the Portrayal of Some Idea, “Caught Napping’* and “His First Pipe’’ won Ist and 2nd, both by Mr. Halliwell. Personal. Hamilton was quite excited on Tuesday last, when news came that two of her bankers had been tired on while on the way to Ohaupo, and one rather seriously injured. Mr. Ward, the Manager of the Bank of Australasia, was the driver of the buggy, and fortunately escaped injury, but Mr. Jordan, ledgerkeeper of the Bank of New Zealand, received gunshot wounds on the left arm, neck and side of the face which necessitated his being taken to the Waikato Hospital. Mrs. Valder and her children have returned from an enjoyable time at Takapuna. Mr. and Mrs. Furby return to Hamilton on Saturday next. We are pleased to note the success of their youngest son, Mr. Edward Furby, who has successfully passed his examination as third marine engineer. We much regret to record the death of Mr. W. Shackelford, a promising young dentist of this town, and a member of the tennis club, who died very suddenly from that dread disease, appendicitis. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Swarbriek. old and well-known residents of Hamilton, were deeply grieved to hear oi the death of their youngest son (Henry), after only three days’ illness, from meningitis.
