NEW PLYMOUTH.

November 12. Tennis. The formal opening of the New Plymouth West End Club's courts took

place last Saturday. There was a largs attendance of the publie. Amongst those present I noticed: Miss Lewis (Gisborne), cream costume, brown chip I.at with yellow roses; Mrs. Remind, navy blue costume, hat swathed with reseda green ribbon; Mrs. Alexander, white linen, Tuscan hat finished with, floral scarf; Mrs. Leatham, white muslin, white crinoline straw hat trimmed with pale pink roses, and loops of blaek velvet ribbon; Mrs. Penn, white embroidered muslin, brown chip straw hat" Mrs. 11. Stocker, white muslin with enrbioidery insertion. French blue straw hat, and floral scarf: Mrs. Claude Weston, cream and brown striped colienne, with bands of brown -ilk and rich cream lace on bodice, pretty blaek feathered hat; Mrs. Atkinson, very striking crea. i clcth coat and skirt trimmed with black and white silk braid, brown straw toque with roses and coqne feathers; Mrs. Frank Wilson looked well in a lovely embroidered muslin with narrow satin bands on skirt, black feathered Irat; Miss Brewster, white tucked and insertioned muslin, burnt straw hat swathed with sweet peas; Mrs. W. Shaw, pale grey costume faced with black and white, striped silk, blank feathered toque; Mrs Home, blaek costume, waistcoat of white silk veiled in black laee, pretty violet bodice finished with lilac: Mrs. H. Day, narrow navy blue and white striped costume, eream hat with pink roses; Miss Carte, moss green striped linen ccstume, brighter green straw hat with cerise roses; Miss McKellar, grey costume faced with green, burnt straw hat with lilac; Mrs. Fitzherbert, grey andblack striped linen eoat and skirt, black feathered hat; Mrs Courtney, black costume, real laee yoke, blaek and white hat; Miss E. McAllum. white muslin, Tuscan hat swathed with lilac: Miss Devore (Auckland), Wedgwood blue coat and skirt, Tuscan hat with lilac; Miss M. Fookes, white muslin, cornfl ewer blue silk, swathing hat; Miss Whitaker (England), moss green costume, hat with shaded roses; Miss E. Bayley, cinnamon brown linen coat and skirt, eream silk blouse, ecru coloured hat, with pale pink roses and loops of brown velvet ribbon: Miss Hanna, reseda green flecked tweed costume, burnt straw hat with loups of reseda green ribbon; Miss Bedford, eau de nil Shantung silk, eream lace yoke, violet mushroom hat with roses: Miss D. Bedford, white muslin, Tuscan hat; Mrs. G. Kebbell, reseda green coat and skirt trimmed with blaek -ilk braid, cornflower blue hat, with blue floral scarf; Miss M. Robinson, rose pink muslin, creamcrinoline -straw hat, with loops of pale pink satin ribbon.

Bowling. The New Plymouth Bowling Club was formally opened last Tuesday afternoon, and there was a large attendance of members and visitors. About three o'clock the President (Mr. G. Grey), after making his welcoming speech, called upon Mrs. Grey to throw the Jack, and thus open the season. Dainty afternoon tea was served in the pavilion provided by the President's wife, Mrs. Grey. Goldwater, rich ’m-omi taffetas, brown hat with shaded roses; her friend wore a very pretty white muslin, with embroidered la.ee coat, dainty eream hat en -nite; Mrs. 'Morrison, navy coat and skirt, violet hat: Mrs. Sinclair, black taffetas, semiEmpire blaek and white hat; Mrs. I*raeer, pretty mole coloured costume en Princesse. bonnet trimmed with coque bathers; Mrs. R. Gray, navy blue tailormade, with black silk braidings, pretty vieux rose hat wreathed with roses and silk; Mrs. Hall, tussore silk, heliotrope trque; Mrs Percy Webster, green linen, vieux rose hat; Mrs. Clement Webster, eream costume, pretty black feathered bat.

Fire Brigade Ball. Th,. Theatre Royal wa; decidedly en fete last Tuesday evening (King's Birthday). it being the occasion of the Fire

Brigade’s annus! plain and fancy dress ball, and never was the hall and floor so crowded, hundreds thronging the gallery and stage. The children had been taught their dancing by Misses Bedford, B. Clarke, Kirkby and Mr. N. Day. The ladies’ committee was as follows: Mesdames E. M. Smith (President), G. Tiseh (Mayoress), F. C. Bellringer, R. 'Jury, Bach, F. E. Clarke, Day, W. Sadler, J. Clarke. A. Coleman, Moon, HardSviek, Simmonds, Misses Bedford, Kirkby, Clarke, E. Collis Nicholls, and M. Humphries; while Afesdames C. E. Baker, J. Avery and E. Whittle acted as judges for the children’s fancy costumes, .which were awarded as follows: For the most original fancy dress, Miss Mona Lealand (“Shorings”) ; Master Leslie Turner (“Wood’s Peppermint Cure”) ; for the best fancy costumes, Miss Violet •Doughty (“Fairy Queen”) and Master Leslie Day (“Uncle Sam”). Personal, Miss Fraser (New Plymouth) is on a jrisit to her friends in Auckland. Master Newton Quilliam (New Plymouth) is visiting his sister, Mrs. Leo. Horrocks (Feilding). Mrs. Quilliam, who has been on a visit to Feilding, Wellington and Nelson, returned to New Plymouth last week.
