November 12. The Gay Week. The carnival gaities began on Friday afternoon, when Mrs. W’alter Stringer gave a garden party at her residence in Merivale. The day was just perfect for an outdoor function, and the host and hostess were indefatigable in their efforts to ensure the enjoyment of their many guests. Mr. and Mrs. Stringer stood on the lawn to receive them, the latter wearing a lovely gown of pale duck-egg blue, richly embroidered, largo black picture hat with ostrich feathers. The dainty refreshments were served in a large marquee, and a band played an excellent programme of music during the afternoon. Cup Day. The next day (Saturday) broke gloriously fine, and expectations ran high for a lovely day for the opening day at Riecarton; but, sad to say, we were disappointed, for later on very heavy showers of rain fell, and the lovely gowns prepared to grace the lawn on Cup Day were for the most part hidden away under coats and wraps.
