15th October. An Enjoyable Afternoon. A very enjoyable book title afternoon was given by Mrs. Donner on Friday afternoon of last week. The first prize was gained by Miss de Lautour, the second by Miss L. Barker. Mrs. Donner, as hostess, looked charming in a heliotrope ninon, large white hat' trimmed with ostrich feathers; Mrs. White, brown silk and laee, brown hat; Mrs. Mac Lean,

navy blue taffeta, blue toque; Mrs. Scott, navy blue serge, hat en suite; Mrs. Bennett, brown spotted muslin, brown hat; Mrs. Walter Barker, navy blue striped silk, blue hat; Mrs. F. Barker, white embroidered muslin, white hat; Mrs. Willock, blue striped silk, hat to match; Mrs’ Thomas, grey silk, white hat; Mrs. O. Sainsbury, brown cloth, black hat with Toses; Miss Donner, green linen. Among the guests present were: The Misses Bennett, Nolan, Symons, Davies, Schumacher, Foster, Wachsmann (2), Barker (2), Black, White, De Lautour, Tucker, Fergusson, Grey-Scott, Williams, Maclean, Sherratt, Reynolds, Williamson. A Successful Dance. A most enjoyable outing was the reward of those who journeyed out to Mangatu last Tuesday at the invitation of Mr. D. Buchanan, to a dance in the woolshed at Wairero. No pains had been spared to make the guests comfortable, large marquees having been erected for their sleeping accommodation. The woolshed, used as a ballroom, was a complete picture, having been beautifully decorated with nikau palms, tree ferns, lovely white clematis, and kowhai. The guests were received by Mrs. Snow (sister to Mrs. Buchanan), who looked charming in a rich blaek merveilleux gown, and Mrs. Jeffrey (sister to Mr. Buchanan), who wore a pretty white spotted net costume, relieved with touches of black velvet. Among the guests present I noticed: Mrs. W. T. M. Buekley, wearing black spangled net; Mrs. W. B. Barker, black merveilleux; Mrs. Humphreys, white embroidered muslin; Mrs. Pattullo, black taffeta, relieved with net; Mrs. L. B. Tulloch, white satin; Mrs. R. L. Barton, black taffeta; Mrs. Turnbull, black merveilleux; Mrs. Harry Dods, white silk; Miss Williams, black taffeta, trimmed with blue; Miss Snow (Christchurch), black silk; Miss E. Barker, pale pink taffeta, trimmed with cream lace; Miss Nolan, black taffeta, laee berthe; Miss Fergusson, pale blue chiffon; Miss Wachsmann, pink ninon, trimmed with spangles; Miss Nixon, blue taffeta; Miss Evans, pink floral muslin; Miss Margaret Black, pink taffeta; Miss Richardson, pink mousseline de sole. Personal. Dr. and Mrs. Hyde, and Miss Hyde, who have been visiting Mr. Hyde, Tologa Bay, returned to Central. Otago on Sunday. Mrs. C. J. Bennett returned from a visit to Wellington on Saturday. Mrs. R. G. Black has gone to Waipukurau to visit friends there, leaving Gisborne on Saturday last. Mr. E. Lane (Napier) returned South on Sunday last. Mr. Brodriek (Napier) has been spending a week in Gisborne, returning South onTVednesday last.
