NAPIER.

August 13th. Civil Service Ball. The annual ball of the Napier branch Of the Civil Service Association eventuated on Wednesday evening last. The function was held in the Garrison Hall, which was effectively decorated with Hags. The weather was most unpropitious, but that did not deter a large number of dancers from attending. The Grand March was led off at 8.30, and dancing was kept up enthusiastically until 3 o’clock. It would be very difficult, at such a large function, to detail all the pretty dresses worn, and some were indeed very handsome. The number of white frocks amongst the dancers was quite noticeable. Mrs. D. N. McMillan wore a smart gown of pale green ehiffon taffeta, reseda trimmings; Mrs. C. Critchley, dainty frock of white silk, with pink silk poppies finishing corsage; Mrs. J. Archer, Empire gown of white silk, with spangled net; .Mrs. Jowett, shrimp pink silk muslin, old rose velvet trimmings; Miss Hutson, very becoming Empire frock of old rose chiffon taffeta, guipure lace on bodice; Mis. J. Thompson, ivory satin gown; Miss Burgess, dainty Empire froek of creme silk; her sister wore pale blue; Miss Allen, black spangled net gown; Miss P. Ferguson, pale blue muslin de soie; Miss Ashton, lavender flowered chiffon; Miss D. Ashton, princess robe of pale pink silk, overdress of dewdrop net; Miss Price, very pretty froek of pale heliotrope erepe de chine with velvet trimmings of a deeper tone; Miss Butcher, handsome gown of ivory satin charmeuse with effective gold trimming on corsage; Miss K. A committee of ladies and gentlemen has been formed to promote the Hospital Ball, the date of which has been altered—it will not take place next month. It is to take the form of a poster, fancy, and plain ball, and is to be held in the Garrison Hall. The ladies on the committee are Mesdames F. W. Williams, T. H. Lowry, H. Hill, A. E. Eagleton, E* R. C. Bowen, F. Mayne, J. A. Miller, and L. H. McHardie. The gentlemen are: Messrs J. V. Brown, M.P., T. Richardson, J. Scheele, Captain Baker and J A Miller. Golf. On Thursday afternoon a number of ladies journeyed from Gisborne to try conclusions with local ladies on the links. They played interesting games on the Waiohiki links on Friday afternoon. The ladies who represented the Napier clubs were: Miss Hindmarsh, Miss Hamlin, Mrs Kurupo Tareha, Miss B. Hindmarsh, Mrs A. A. Kennedy, Mrs Beman, Mrs Smith, Mrs Russell, Miss Newbold. Personal. Mr and Mrs James Wilson have gone to their home in Melbourne. Mr and Mrs L. R. Wilson, of Dunedin, are on a visit to Napier. Mr and Mrs T. H. Lowry, of Okawa, are in town for a few days. Miss Partridge, of Wellington, has been spending a holiday in Napier to recuperate after a recent illness. She is now the guest of Mrs Lethbridge, of “Sherenden,” Hastings. Mr and Mrs Russell, of Wellington, who have been spending a short holiday in Napier, left for their home at the end of the week. Mrs A. J. Williams, of Napier, is visiting friends in Wellington. At present she is the guest of Mrs Dimant. Mrs J. Sandtimann, of Napier, has gone

for a short holiday to Wellington, where she will be the guest of Mr and Mrs Smith, of Wellington Terrace.
