THE HI NT CLUB BALL took place at the Alexandra Hall on Tuesday, when an unusually large number of people were present ; indeed, so great was the crowd that it was almost impossible to dance for the first few dances. Elworthy, black and white skirt, black Eton coat, pink straw hat with crown of pink poppy petals, white ostrich feather boa; Mrs. Ranald Macdonald, costume of dark red cloth with toque to match; Mrs. Roberts (Westerfield), navy blue cloth Eton costume, black hat with shaded pink ostrich feathers, pink feather boa to match; Mrs. H. Johnston, green cloth coat and skirt, green hat with pink and white leaves, set of stone marten furs; Mrs. Wall, dark cloth costume, pale grey hat with ostrich feather, stone marten furs; Mrs. G. Merton, petunia-coloured cloth gown with hat to match; Mrs. George Rhodes (Meadowbank), navy blue cloth coat and skirt, navy blue hat with pink roses, white fox furs; Mrs. Beswick, pale grey cloth costume, grey hat with pink roses; Mrs. F. Cowlishaw, grey tweed coat and skirt, grey hat with pink roses and convolvulus; Miss Helmore, costume of dark red cloth, green hat; Miss Symes, navy blue coat and skirt, blaek hat with ostrich feather; Mrs. Paul Studholme (Waitnate), grey tweed costume, hat with pink roses and foliage; Mrs. W. Day, navy blue costume, black hat with feathers; Mrs. H. Elworthy (Craigraore), pale green cloth gown, green hat with pink roses, white fox furs; Miss Todhunter, an Eton costume of pale grey cloth, grey and black hat: Mrs. R. Harley (Oxford), dark grey tweed, Tuscan straw hat with green and brown roses; Mrs. George Harris, dark grey costume, black hat, sealskin coat; Mrs. R. Harman, red and black striped coat and skirt, black hat. A SMALL BRIDGE PARTY was given on Saturday by Miss Humphreys at Fendalton. The first prize, a green purse, was won by Miss I. Prins, and the second, a fancy hatpin, by Miss E. Prins. Miss Denniston received the booby prize. The guests included Mrs. Cowlishaw, the Misses Cook (2), Miss Reeves, Miss Rita Wilson, Miss Wilkin, Miss Seeretan, and Miss Anderson. On Monday evening Miss Denniston gave A GIRLS’ BRIDGE PARTY. The prize was won by Miss Cook. Other players were: Miss Reeves, Miss Wilson, Miss Denniston (Dunedin), Miss Nedwill and the Misses Humphreys (2). Amongst the visitors to Christchurch for the races and gaieties of Grand National Week were: Mrs. and the Misses Wells (Amberley), Sir William Russell (Hawke’s Bay), Miss Russell, Miss Brandon (Wellington), Mr. and Mrs. Acton Adams, Miss Denniston (Dunedin), Miss Orbell (Timaru), Mrs. A.
