CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee, - July 27. This week has been a particularly quiet one as far as private entertaining is concerned. There have been NO SOCIAL FUNCTIONS TO CHRONICLE. Possibly society is reserving its strength for Grand National week, which is coming on apaee. There are rumours even of balls—so far three are talked about —but nothing definite has been - decided on. The High School Old Girls' Association held A PLEASANT REUNION on Friday evening at the Caledonian Society’s Rooms, when an enjoyable programme, consisting of songs and a short play, was given by members. The Association intend to give a large “At Home” or dance before long. A COMING WEDDING. Mr. George Humphreys has sent out invitations for Miss Charlewood's marriage to Mr. Quartley, of the Bay of Islands. The wedding will take place

at St. Mary’s. Merivale, and the reception afterwards will be held at Mr., Humphrey’s residence, “ Fendalton." GOLF. The weather is delightful for the links, and they daily attract a large number of players. Just now the local championships is the chief interest. The drawing for the championship took place on Saturday, and the first matches are being played this week. Last week the match for the senior medal was won by Miss Kettle. Miss Rutherford, who played off the final in the Yankee tournament with Miss Wilson, proved the winner in the end. THE SKATING RINK attracts a large number of people just now, some of whom are enthusiasts. A small private club has been formed in connection with it; the members have rooms there. We hear not only of the supper parties, and afternoon teas, to which they invite their friends, but even breakfasts have been included. Some of the skaters are Miss Steele, Miss Barker, the Misses Trent, Miss Russell, Miss Charlewood, Miss Guthrie, Mr. Brittain,

Mr. Comerford. Mrs. and Miss Syme* Mrs. G. Ronalds, Miss Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. George Rhodes, Miss H. Campbell, Miss Cotterill.
