Dttor Bee, March 2. Lent is now upon us, and our gaieties have therefore subsided for the present. However, last week there were a few festivities, chief among which was an “AT HOME” GIVEN BY MRS. CHATFIELD. The pretty house at Island Bay was thronged with guests, and the big garden, with its large trees, afforded a welcome shelter from the boisterous wind. Great fun was provided by a “celebrity” competition. The first prize, a jewelled photo fiame. was won by Miss Eva Butts. The range of names was wide, including William the Conqueror, Mrs. Gamp, Mr. Chamberlain a yd Edna May. so the struggle to guess correctly was a strenuous one. The second prize, a quaint pair of pottery candlesticks, was divided between Miss May Seddon and Miss Barron. Two or three delightfully amusing recitations by Miss Arndt added to the enjoyment of the afternoon. The tea tables were charmingly decorated with miniature sunflowers and red-brown foliage, while the hot and dusty day caused the supply of delicious grapes to be much appreciated. Mi s. Chatfield wore black mousseline de soie, with entredeux of black lac?, a note of colour being afforded by a choux of pale blue ribbon. The Misses Chatfield had pretty white dresses of lace and muslin. and Miss <>. Chatfield was in pale pink, with a design of roses. Miss A. Macgregor, who was helping with the tea, wore black canvas inserted with lace. Mrs. Nathan wore brown cloth with facings of yellow, and a brown and gold toque: Miss Nathan, pale blue canvas and black hat; Mrs. O'Connor, black tailormade and pale blue toqu'P: Miss O’Connor, grey cloth and floral* hat : Lady Stout, pale grey taffetas, with lace vest and ruffles. grey chiffon and lace hat with pink flowers; Mrs* Mitford, pale blue Astrella with quillings Of glace, toque en suite; Mrs. Carminer, smart dress of pale blue checked glace, the yoke of esprit net having tiny rouleaux of pale pink velvet, vest and ruffles of ecru lace, pale pink hat, wreathed with wistaria: Miss Kennedy,

The guests included Misses Tolhurst, Miles, Fitzgerald, Haise. Fell, Ewen. Teas were also given FOR MISS HEYWOOD. w ho has just gone to England. A GIRLS’ TEA was given on Wednesday by the Misses Edwin as a farewell to some of their friends, who are leaving Wellington. Miss Edwin wore white silk, with touches of black: Miss Avis Edwin was in white, with a chine sash: Miss Grace Morrah had a dress of pah* mauve relieved with green: Miss Reid, blue canvas and green hat: Mi>s Harding, pale p’nk muslin and floral hat: Miss Macintosh, green and white muslin and black hat : Miss Butts, pale blue floral voile; Miss Tolhurst, black voile and hat with flowers.
