WATER SPORTS AT NAPIER. NAPIER, Monday. The first aquatic sports meeting of the recently formed Port Ahurirl Swimming Club was held in the Iron I’ot on Saturday. There was a very large ciowcl of spectators. The water was very choppy, and this interfered to some, extent with the competitors, and prevented anything like fast times being recorded. 'The results were as follows; —Boys' race, over 13, 80 yards: S. Simmons. Boys’ race, under 13, 20 yards: W. Merrit. Maiden race, 75 yards: J. McKinley 1. Timo 1.17. Port Ahurirl handicap (75, 220 and 440 yaids) —First distance, 220 yards: J. Knowles, scr., 1; J. McKinley, 245, 2. Won easily. Time. 14.47. Second distance, 75 yards: E. W. Johnson, sor., 1; J. McKinley, Bs, 2. Won easily. Third distance, 440 yards (reduced by consent to 300 yards): J. Knowles, scr., 1; J. McKinley, 48s, 2. Won very easily. Knowles won the event with 10 points, J. McKinley being second with 6 points, E. W. Johnson third with 5 points. Youths’ handicap. 75 yards: S. Forne, scr. Clothes race, 50 yards, fully dressed: By winning the boys’ race over 13 yeais. Master Sid. Simmonds became the champion athlete of the Fort Ahurlri School for the year. TRIAL FOURS AT NAPIER. NAPIER, Monday. The trial fours of the Napier Rowing Club, rowed over a mile course on the new cut on Saturday iu smooth water, were all fairly well contested. The following were the results: First heat: A. St. Paul beat IL C. Magill. Second heat: C. Bisson beat .Lr. Hay. 'Third heat: 11. Dewes beat G. Steward. B. Cuthbert, won from C. Smith by default. In the semi finals St. Paul boat Cuthbert, and Dewes heat Bisson. In the final A. St. Paul (stroke). I*. Woon (3), D. Anderson (2), and B. Brandon (bow) beat 11. Dewes (stroke), 11. Kershaw (3), D. I>. Max (2), and Goldsbury (bow) by a length and a-ha if. On the form shown in those races it is proposed to select crews, probably three, for the regatta to be held at the Wahgftnu! carnival during Christmas week.
