MARLBOROUGH.

Dear Bee, March 29. Gradually the news of the losses sustained by our settlers comes in. and we fear that the consequence will be a time of depression for all business people, farmers, runholders, etc., and consequently for us all. lx*nt. of course, adds its quota of depression, and very little is going on. Great disappointment is felt that the s.s. Ayrshire, the largest steamer which as yet has visited our port, was not allowed to come up to the wharf, so that our inland excursionists anight visit the boat, but the powers that be in the person of the harbour-master, decreed otherwise, fearing, no doubt, tha-t the structure doing duty for a wharf

eight be carried away bodily, and the Gvreriiment would have to build a new one. The captain was quite ready to take the risk, but the local powers, much as they need a new wharf, would not risk anything. Meetings all on the subject of Hood prevention up .Blenheim way. Havelock, and Tuamarina are taking the place of social functions and exhibition interests. in Picton. meetings are all in relation to tiie hospital ball for Easter Monday. Fortunately for them they are not troubled with Hoods, though, of course, they also feel the depression resulting therefrom. The opening of the Havelock Cottage Hospital was a very successful function, though a great many people were unable to be present owing to the damage done to roads aml bridges by the flood. The Hon. C. If. Mills came from Wellington to open the building and to take advantage of the gathering to reiterate his ever-verdant advice to "agitate, agitate,” forgetting that people have agitated in this district without avail for more railways and a new •wharf till they are gone grey under the process.

The Marlborough Volunteers proceed to Nelson by steamer on Thursday to take part in the Easter manoeuvres, to foe held in camp in the Nelson district. They are to return on Easter Tuesday.

MIRANDA.
