MARLBOROUGH.

Dear Bee, February 8. The Marlborough Lawn Tennis Club tried conclusions with a few players from Pieton on Saturday last, and won, of course, though a few of the visitors proved themselves quite worthy of the steel of the premier club. Afternoon tea was provided, and though the day was intensely hot a most enjoyable time was spent, the Pieton contingent returning home by the late train. Quite a successful GARDEN PARTY was held by the friendly societies in Nelson Square on Wednesday last. The Square was illuminated, and a torchlight procession round the town attracted a large crowd. A concert, in which the two local bands and a number of vocalists took part, was much enjoyed. Mrs Redman (Pieton) gave a MOST ENJOYABLE EVENING for some Blenheim friends who were visiting the port on Tuesday. Cards, vocal and instrumental music, pingpong, and other amusements made the time fly. A delicious supper was laid in the dining-room. The table decorations were greatly admired. Mrs Redman was in blaek laee over pink silk; Mrs Gard (Springlands), blaek silk amt handsome silk Maltese lace fichu; Mrs Allen, blaek satin trimmed with silk gimp; Mrs Le Coeq, black silk skirt and terra-cotta silk blouse; Mi’s Staee (Robin Hood Bay), black silk and white laee fichu; Mrs Conolly (Springlands,

Blenheim), white silk trimmed with laee and insertion; Mrs Riddell, pale blue erepe trimmed with white lace; Miss Staee, black skirt, white silk blouse; Miss Chaytor. white silk trimmed with lace; Miss E. M. Allen, blaek skirt and yellow silk blouse. The gentlemen present were: Dr. Redman, Messrs. J. Conolly, lai Coeq, Riddell, 11. Chaytor, and F. Seymour. THURSDAY'S EXCURSION. was even more largely patronised than usual, and the steam and oil launches were full up with pleasure-seekers. This season has been particularly favourable for picnics. A PRIVATE PICNIC was held at Ongahau Bay on Friday, the amusing part of it being that not one of the promised contingent of gen-

tiemen rolled up. However, that joes to show how well ladies manage when left to themselves. Never before did the fire burn so brightly, and never before was there such delicious “billy” tea. The ladies enjoyed themselves thoroughly, ami contemplate having many more such holiday outings before the season ends. Among those present were Mesdames Le Cneq, Mncalister, Riddell, G. Seymour, Mitchell, C. Philpotts, nnd several others. Afternoon tea on the WAITOHI LAWN TENNIS GROUND was presided over on Thursday by Misses Miles and <). Cragg. Quite a large party was present, and so interested are the young people in the amusement provided that they are asking for ping-pong tournaments to be

started during the winter months when the necessary repairs and improvements are being made to the court*.

1 suppose Marlborough ladies are nut unique when they fail to appreciate the ‘'thoughtful consideration” of some of the clerical members of the General Synod in regard to our rights in church matters. Is it any wonder that we take so little interest in a religion which upholds a man- be he never such a dummy, and worse—in a position *n the church and condemns a woman, liecause she is a woman, though her abilities and honour may soar as tar above the ordinary lay reader, or even a bishop, as the stars are above the

earth? Women are far more religious than men, though there are many PeckAhitfs in the world still, and it seems strange that the worm has not turned long ago, and taken up a religion in which men ami particularly narrowminded men—have no purl.
