AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, February 10. You have only to glance at the number of columns which the Auckland society news spreads itself over this week to realise that we have had a very busy time of it lately. There is, in fact, so much to tell you of that I scarcely know ■where to start and what to describe first. The largest and most important affair was certainly the GARDEN PARTY’ IN HONOUR OF THE MEMBERS OF TOE GENERAL SYNOD AT “TE KITEROA,” TAKAPUNA, when Mr. and Mrs. Brett entertained an enormous concourse of people at their beautifully-situated place on the shores of the lake and overlooking the sea. As you are aware, the party had been postponed from the previous Thursday, and though this must have meant much trouble to the host and hostess, yet, from one point of view, it proved a blessing in disguise, for the heavy rain had revived lawns and flower borders after the long drought, and the gardens were seen at their best, the lawns being wonderfully green for the time of year and the flower borders brilliant with early autumn and late summer flowers.

The guests were conveyed from Auckland to Takapuna by special steamers, one leaving at a quarter-past one and the other an hour later. Most of the visiting Synodsmen and their friends went by the earlier boat, which made a short preliminary trip round the harbour to give the visitors some idea of the beauties of the Hauraki Gulf. Arrived at the Lake, the guests were received by Mr. and Mrs. Brett standing at the foot of one of the terraces leading up to the residence, and thence they assembled in groups on the lawns or wandered about the grounds admiring the views of the harbour on the one side and the lake itself on the other. Large refreshment marquees were erected, in which tea, ices, claret and champagne cup, and many delicacies were dispensed by a capable staff of waitresses under the able supervision of Mr. Speight, of the Strand Cafe Company, to whom this important portion of the entertaining of those present was entrusted. The arrangements were very convenient, tea and refreshments being obtainable in one tent, and claret cup, etc., and ices in another, and so on, thus preventing any waiting or crushing, though the guests were so numerous. The Garrison Band was stationed on the lawn, and played selections dining the afternoon, and in the drawing-room Mr. Walter Whyte provided a very greatly appreciated musical treat by singing “Bianca,” and in response to a request for more, “ Doreen.” Mr. Whyte's fine tenor voice was greatly admired. Among so many it was naturally impossible to see more than a portion of the guests, and I cannot pretend to give anything like a complete list of dresses. Amongst those I saw were: —
