VETERANS' HOME AMATEUR THEATRICALS. A very fashionable audience attended the amateur performance of •’Engaged” by a well-known cast of young people, in aid of the Veterans’ Home bazaar funds. The arrangements were excellent. The ushers in the hall were ladies, and though they exhibited decided nervousness at first, they soon got over it. and performed their duties very satisfactorily. Now as to the performance! One hears all sorts of opinions. That of the women critics is on the whole favourable, but the num-folk were not much impressed. There can he no doubt that a comedy where any dialect plays an important part is full of pit-falls for amateurs, and to hear broad Scotch in the earlier part of a sentence relapse into drawing-room English in another is trying. Aloreover. amateur love-making is amateurish to a degree, and in “Engaged” there is a surplusage of lovemaking.
