St. Andrew’s Hall, Port Ahuriri, was well filled on the evening of the 24th inst., when the Cathedral choir gave an

in aid of the funds of St. Andrew’s Church. Miss Adele King, who was as usual much applauded, sang “Slumber Sea,” when the audience demanded an encore. Miss Williams also responded to the calls for an encore after her song “Star of Bethlehem.” Mr C. Margoliouth played an andante on the violin in his most finished style, and “The Longshoreman,” by Mr C. Ellis, was also very good. The Cathedral choir charmed all with their part songs. An item in the programme which was of great interest to many was the trio by Misses ing, Bishop, and Mr Sharp, of “Ti Pego.” A delightful song, “The Friar of Orders Grey,” was given by Mr Longworth. At the end of the programme votes of thanks were passed to Mr Sharp and the choir by the Rev. O. Dean and Captain Botham.

The weather was very wet and unpromising for the Winter Meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club at Hastings, nevertheless there was a fair at-

tendance. One of the great events of the day was the ladies’ bracelet race, which was won by Apres. During the afternoon Sir William Russell presented the trophy to Mrs Rathbone, the owner of the horse, amidst hearty cheers. MARJORIE.
