Knitting as an Exercise for the Hands.
Knitting is nowadays recommend
ed to sufferers from rheumatism as a helpful exercise to prevent the hands becoming stiff from the complaint. For persons liable to cramp,
paralysis, and similar affections of the fingers, knitting is considered :> very useful exercise. It is, moreover, valuable not merely as an exercise, but for its effect on the nerves, and accordingly it is recommended to women who suffer from insomnia and depression.
In certain sanatoriums the patients are encouraged to knit, and the sigh, of the flashing needles and of the work growing under their fingers makes the exercise both cheering and interesting.
