CHRISTCHURCH.
Dear Bee,
May 14
Again the Colosseum has been turned into a flower garden, and for those who are mad on rinking the two days’ flower show have been considered as two wasted days, but, judging by the attendance, and the splendid exhibits at the show, there are a goodly number who have not the craze yet. The groups were very handsome, the baskets, bowls and vases very beautiful, the autumn leaves having such lovely colouring this season. About thirty decorated tables occupied floor space, and some two or three really excellent displays of the autumn queen made a glorious show. The Bavarian Baud played each evening, and was much enjoyed. The children’s tables (under sixteen) were a most creditable part of the show, and the ladies will have to look to their laurels. Miss Gladys Searell took first prize in this, and the ladies were judged by vote, Miss
Overton securing first. Mrs A. Cant scored in the display of flowers and two vases. Among the visitors were Mr and Mrs A. E..G. Rhodes, the latter in black coat and skirt, large black hat; Mrs Denniston, very dark brown gown, red cape with black strappings, black and red toque; Mrs G. Denniston (Dunedin), black costume, black and green toque; Miss Denniston, navy blue eoat and skirt, black hat with cerise bows; Mrs Boyle, grey coat and skirt, cloth or felt hat to match with silk bows; Mrs G. G. Stead, black costume with pale blue vest, blaek caracul jacket with wide ermine collar, blaek and pale, blue toque; Mrs Palmer, all black with handsome velvet mantle, blaek and white ibonuet; Mrs E. C. J. Stevens, in blaek, relieved with pale blue; Mrs R. D. Thomas, mourning costume: Mrs Meredith-Kaye, rich brown costume, cream vest, hat to match; Mrs Cook, dull green coat and skirt, black hat; Mrs W. Stringer, very handsome costume in frieze, seal coat, black toque; Mrs Waymouth, dark red frieze gown, turban hat, trimmed with black; Mrs J. D. Hall, black costume and hat, white lace vest; Mrs Cobham, brown cloth costume, toque to match; Mesdames Reeves, Russel), Maude, Bowen, Crosby, Appleby, Croxton, 11. Meares, T. CowlishaSv, Wilding, Ogle, Turnbull, Beswick, Malet. Dalgety, Fox, Elworthy, the Misses Mills. Meares, Wilding, Dickie (North Island), Hargreaves, Cholmondeley, Garforth, Waymouth, Cook, Reeves, Buller (Auckland), and numbers more.
To-day the citizens of Christchurch have to bid adieu to Mr A. E. G. Rhodes as Mayor, and they do it very reluctantly and regretfully, as through an eventful year he has proved himself worthy of the office in every way, ably seconded by Mrs Rhodes. Mr H. F. Wigram (Mayorelect) will then take up the reins, and as he is popular already it will not be so difficult for him to follow.
On Thursday a very pleasant reunion of the members of the Musical
Society took place in the Art Gallery to mark the very successful season they had had with Mdlle. Dolores. Among those present were Judge Denniston (the President), Mrs Denniston, Bishop and Mrs Julius, Dr. anti Mrs Bradshaw, Mr and Mrs Izard, Mr and Mrs A. Kaye, Professor Cook, and a large number of the members. Some very good musical items were given by the orchestra, a violin solo by Miss L. Cook, songs by Misses Falconer, Morrow, Macgregor, Messrs Sorrell and Aylmer. Two tables for ping-pong were a source of much amusement, and refreshments were handed round during the evening.
DOLLY VALE.
