HASTINGS.

Dear Bee, October 26. The Takapau Caledonian Society gave an exceedingly good concert at May’s Publie Hall, on the evening of the 19th inst., when a capital programme was greatly enjoyed by an appreciative audience. One of the chief features in the performance was a vocal duet, which was most skilfully rendered by Messrs Slade and Hosking, who were obliged to respond to an encore. Miss Coe sang, “Good-bye at. the Door,” in a charming manner, and “The Link Divine,” sung with great pathos by Miss Baskeville, gained much applause. The Misses Coe sang duets, “Friendship,” and “Masie and her Sister,” with tine effect. Mr Slade, accompanied by Miss Davies, acquitted himself brilliantly. Miss Peddic gained an encore in “Promise of My Life,” and Miss Balfour and Mr Collins sang, as usual, in their finished style. The part songs were well received, and quite justified the enthusiasm which greeted them. There were a large number of visitors at the opening of the Hastings Bowling Club on Wednesday, when a most enjoyable afternoon was spent by those present. An appropriate speech was made by Mr Joshua Bennett. The opening game was played by Mrs Beatson, wife of the vice-president, who also provided afternoon tea. An entertainment of a patriotic nature was given nt the Oddfellows’ Hall, Taradale, on the 25th inst., when the idea of tableaux vivants proved a great success. Some of the pictures were:—“Just as the Sun Went Down,” “Our Third New Zealanders,” “Britons Rally Round Your Flag,” “There'll Come a Time,” and several others. The tableaux were interspersed with hmsie and recitations by Miss D. Pilmer, Miss Lilia Anderson, who sang “The Gypsy’s Warning,” with much feeling, and Mr Gibbons, whose “Just One Girl,” was greeted with much applause. Some other performers were Miss Atkins, Miss E. Fisher, Mr D. J. Gibson, Mr A. Kirkham, Mr W. Sellar, and others.
