NELSON.

Dear Bee, — June 18. The ART EXHIBITION arranged by the Bishopdale Sketching Club was formally opened in the Suter Art Gallery by the Bishop of Nelson on Monday evening, and will continue open every afternoon and evening for about a fortnight. There are a large number of exhibits, many of the pictures being very beautiful, especially those by Mr. E. W. Payton (Auckland), Mr. Walter Wright (Auckland), Mr. J. 11. Nairn (Wellington), Miss Richardson (Wellington), Miss Stoddart (Christchurch). Miss D. K. Richmond and Mrs. E. F. W. Cooke, of Nelson. There is also some beautiful fancy work by Miss Igglesden, of Wellington, and others, and some most handsome wood carving by the Rev. E. Isaac and his pupils. The attendance during the week has been remarkably good. Amongst those present were the Bishop and Mrs. Mules, Miss Mules, Mrs. and Miss Richmond, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford, Mr. and

Mrs. Patterson. Mr. and Mrs. Cooke, Mesdames de Castro, Sealy, Adams, Watts, Atkinson. Blaekett, Burnes (Cable Bay), Pearson (Wellington), Kingdon, Humphries, Rainier; the Misses Webb-Bowen (2), Day. Robertson, Nina Jones, Heaps, Hunter-Brown, Kempthorne, Stephens, Clifford, lloulker, Sealy and very many others. On Tuesday evening the annual SOCIAL in connection with the Cathedral and All Saints’ parishes was held in the Provincial Hall, There were a fair number present, and all thoroughly enjoyed the excellent music rendered by the different choirs. Songs were sung by the Misses Baigent, Hanby, Harley, Smith and Mr. Ellis, the Rev. J. P. Kempthorne and Mr. Ellis sang a duet, whilst instrumental music was supplied by the Misses Stephens, Kempthorne and Mr. Naylor. Amongst those present were the Bishop and Mrs. Mules. Miss Mules, the Revs. J. P. Kempthorne and Suee, Mr., Mrs. and Miss Holloway, Mrs. Richmond. Mrs. Leggatt, Mrs. Robinson. Mrs. Blundell, Mr., Mrs. and Miss Clifford, Mr., Mrs. and the Misses Stephens, the Misses Kempthorne, Heaps, lloulker, HunterBrown, Humphries, Tendall (Christchurch), Preshaw (2), Cooke (2), Smith (2), Maginnity, Mr. and Mrs. Patterson. Mr. and Mrs. Dickey, Mr. and . Mrs. Preshaw, Mr. Kissling. and many others. The Rev. F. W. Chatterton was detained at the Pelorus owing to the bad state of the roads, so was unable to be present. On Friday evening a most enjoyable EUCHRE PARTI* was given by Mrs. Booth at her residence at the Union Bank of Australia. The large dining-room was used for play, and accommodated twelve tables. Miss Stephens won the first prize, a beautiful silver-mounted paper knife, and Miss Knight (Melbourne) won the second ladies’ prize, a pretty silver glove button-hook. The gentlemen’s prizes were won by Mr.

Undo Ix*vien and Mr. Douglas Buruen. A delicious supper followed; the table —which was laden with delicacies of the season—looked very pretty with specimen glasses filled with white chrysanthemums and green foliage. Mrs. Booth wore a handsome gown of deep claret coloured satin, with frill of ecru lace round low neck of bodice; Miss Knight (Melbourne) looked well in an evening dress of butter-cup satin, transparent sleeves of rucked chiffon; Miss Hubbard, soft white muslin, relieved with nil green ribbons. Mrs. Booth’s two little girls, who supplied the players with wafers, looked pretty in light evening frocks. Amongst the guests were: Mrs. Percy Ada ins, pink silk evening bodice trimmed with velvet of a deeper shade and rich white lace, trained skirt of black satin; Mrs. A. I*. Burnes, evening gown of black satin, the low bodice finished with sapphire blue velvet, edged with pearls, sleeves of white chilTon: Miss F. Edwards, soft white silk evening dress; Mrs. A. Glasgow, evening bodice of cream satin, finished with lace, black silk skirt: Miss Gribben. pretty gown of heliotrope silk, the bodice and sleeves trimmed with fine white lace; Miss Heaps, white muslin; Miss Jones looked well in pink: Mrs. Kingdon, an exceedingly smart gown of black merveilleux. relieved with blue; Miss Levien, amber satin bodice, black satin skirt: Mrs. Mackay, black, relieved with mauve; Miss Preshaw, white silk evening dress: Mrs. (Dr.) Roberts, handsome evening gown of black satin, with true lover's knots in white lace on skirt, and low bodice; Miss Richmond, black evening dress, with red roses on bodice; Miss Robertson, pink satin evening blouse, with cross bands of black bebe ribbon, velvet on yoke and top of sleeves, black silk skirt; Mrs Jack Sharp, pretty blouse of red shot silk, adorned with beautiful old lace, black silk skirt; Miss Sealy, pretty blouse of pink satin, trimmed with fine silk lace, blaek satin skirt; Miss Stephens, black evening dress, relieved with red flowers; her sister wore yellow satin, trimmed with spangled chiffon and sapphire blue velvet; Miss Trolove,
