Dear Bee, October 3. Oar little city is very dall just at present, resting. I’ve nodoabt. before the dissipations of show and race week, when the town will be overflowing with visitors from alt the surrounding districts, and life will be then one wild rush for a week. Last Thursday evening A COMPLIMENTARY CONCERT was given for Mr Spackenan. Mrs Howie was handsomely gowned

in black velvet and yellow aacin, with diamond* in her hair and on corsage. Mise Butt looked very girlish in a dark gown and Mias Williams showed to ad wan rage in pale blue. Amongst the ladies in the audience I noticed Mesdames Nolan. Moy an. Dalrymple. Perry. O’Meara. Butt. Goldsmith. Graeme^Browne, A. Reea» Spackenan. Somerville. Misses Stewart. Browne. De Latour, Gould (Auckland). Yonge (Auckland). Crawford, Somerville, Rees. Lysnar. Sowerby. w _ We have had Lhe most extraordinary weather. Bee. Can you imagine a climat** so unfeeling as ours, which one week gives us a taste of midsummer and lures one to don prints and muslins, and p;an sundry summer sports, then with a bound jumps back into midwinter, and freezes all our tender projects for.warm days and nights 1 AN AFTERNOON TEA was given by Mrs F. T. Morgan, for her sister. Miss Gould, who is on a short visit from Auckland. Tea was laid in the hall, and a table holding sweets of all descrip: ions stood in a corner of the drawing-room. Mrs Frank Kennecy sang one or two songs, her voice sounding to great advantage in the lofty rooim and Mrs Walter Barker also delighted us with her sweet voice. The Misses Adair, Crawford. Campbell, and Yonge played during the afternoon, the last named being a very brilliant player, who has evidently practised a great deal. Our hostess looked very well in grey silk and cashmere: her sisters—Mrs Nolan, black and white ; Mrs Walter Barker, dark skirt and white blouse; and Miss Gould, in blouse and skirt—also looked very pretty. Mies wore dark skirt, pink crepon blouse; Mrs Kennedy, magenta silk blouse, dark skirt, brown and magenta hat; Misses Crawford, half mourning costumes : Miss Campbell-Thomson, peacock blue gown, sailor hat; Miss McGowan, grey tweed, black velvet toque; Misses Giffard (two), sailor hats, tweed dresses; Miss Tucker, black jacket, feather hat; Miss Campbell, blue tweed, sailor bat; Miss Sherratt, black skirt and jacket, sailor hat; Miss Adair, black skirt, velvet blouse, pretty blue and black toque; Miss Wylie, black frock, sailor hat: Miss M. Rees, black skirt, velvet blouse, small yellow toque; Miss Q. Staite, bluejacket and skirt, black lace bat; Miss Willis, brown tweed, straw bat with velvet bands; Miss Cottrell, very neat navy blue costume, red tie. sailor bat; Miss Paisley, tweed gown, small black hat; Miss Kempt borne, brown costume; Miss Taylor, black dress, sailor hat.
